Mangalore, October 16: Strengthening the party at grass root level is the most important thing for a party activist, said Oscar Fernandes, MP.

He was addressing party activists at a meet organized at the district Congress office in Mangalore on Tuesday.

The toughest elections are the Panchayat elections and strengthening the party at the grass root level should be of prime concern for party activists, Mr. Fernandes said. Party activists must look to attract masses by drawing their attention to the various posts and positions available in booth levels, he said.

Advising the members of the Youth Congress to indulge themselves in pro-people activities Mr. Fernandes said that they must take care of getting people's ration card needs done. Colleges are closing down in several places due to lack of students and the Youth Congress must make an attempt to fill those seats by motivating youth, he said.

Urging party activists to be more enthusiastic, Mr. Fernandes said that during the time of Gandhiji although communication tools  were not as good as they are today, the entire country would know of his activities everyday as the word would spread with great enthusiasm. But members of the party today are complaining of lack of information of party activities in spite of all the latest technology being available to them, he pointed out.

The scheduled visit of Sonia Gandhi, President, AICC, will have an 'electrifying effect' on the party activists of the district, he said, while informing that the very intention of the visit is to create direct contact between Ms. Gandhi and members of the Congress party right from the grass root level to the top.

Mangaluru, May 4: Bunder Shramika Sangha (BSS) general secretary B K Imthiyaz on Monday urged the district administration to restart Bengre ferry and passenger boat services as it has affected the wholesale market in Old Port.

A majority of the labourers engaged in loading and unloading at the wholesale market in Old Bunder hail from Bengre area. Without the ferry service, the labourers cannot come to work, said Imthiyaz.

He said no positive cases had been reported from Bengre area. Thus, the district administration should give permission for operating ferry services between 7 am and 12 noon.
