Bangalore, October 18: The city police are not only investigating Tuesday evening's shooting at builder and educationist Dayanand Pai here but also Mr. Pai himself for his alleged role in a forgery case along with Shivajinagar MLA Roshan Baig.

Mr. Pai, a member of the board of management, B.M.S. Institute of Technology, and syndicate member of Mangalore and Manipal Universities, was shot at, allegedly by a local gangster, over a property row near the busy Ramakrishna Ashram junction here five minutes past six on Tuesday evening.

Although the case involving him and Mr. Baig was filed last October, the jurisdictional Bharati Nagar police have reportedly not made any headway.

The case, filed by city builder Ziaulla Sharieff, said Mr. Baig booked a penthouse for his wife on Haines Road by paying Rs. 5 lakh advance with the assurance that the remaining Rs. 45 lakh would be paid in instalments by the time of execution of the sale deed.

Although there was paper work was not done or general power of attorney issued, Mr. Baig took possession of the penthouse and renovated it. When Mr. Sharieff asked for the money, Mr. Baig allegedly threatened him with dire consequences and sold the penthouse to a third party for Rs.1.5 crore, Mr. Sharieff's complaint said.

Mr. Baig allegedly forged the sale deed with the help of Mr. Pai who signed the document claiming to be the apartment's owner.

The Bharati Nagar police sent the documents for forensic examination.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that Mr. Sharieff has been duped. We are waiting for more evidence,” a police officer who is part of theSecurity

Meanwhile, Mr. Pai has been provided with two police gunmen for round-the-clock security following Tuesday's attack, Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) T. Suneel Kumar said.

Contrary to the police statement that his car was bulletproof, the police clarified on Wednesday that its windows had a fibre sheet placed between two or three thick sheets of glass, which helped resist the force of the bullets fired by the assailants.

The Basavanagudi police, who are investigating, said that the two rounds fired at Mr. Pai's car came from 0.22 bore country-make pistols. “We are checking the CCTV footage on the stretch along with [mobile phone] call record details for the clues,” the police said.

The Central Crime Branch is tracking down Hebbet Manja's men after the gangster claimed on a TV channel he orchestrated the attack.

The police are verifying details about a complaint filed at Rajanakunte police station involving Mr. Dayanand Pai over land dispute which allegedly trigged the attack.

However, the Rajanukunte police denied having received any such complaint.

Bengaluru, Jul 7: There seems no impact of Covid-19 on kharif crop sowing in Karnataka with the current year actually being ahead of previous years, according to an official here on Monday.

"In agriculture, as far as sowing is concerned, there is no impact of COVID-19," Agriculture Commissioner Brijesh Kumar Dikshit told IANS. One of the reasons, according to Dikshit, is that people in rural areas are aware, but not scared of the pandemic.

"In rural India, coronavirus is there. People are aware, not scared. They are taking precautions, but don't have any phobia," he said.

Another reason was that by June the number of infections in Karnataka was not as high as other states, when a lot of sowing was done, he said.

By the end of June, Karnataka saw 15,242 Covid-19 cases. Of that, 7,074 were active.

The sowing is ahead of previous year as it's mostly dependent on weather. "It's ahead of previous years. Agriculture is directed by weather and rains had been slightly earlier this year," he said.

According to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, at 185 mm the state received 14 mm less rain in June against the normal 199 mm. "It's like a normal year, or slightly a good year," he said.

Some crops will be sown in the last fortnight of July and few more will extend up to August 15. "The last two weeks will be critical and on July 31 we should be able to tell whether we are short or ahead," he said.

According to preliminary indications, the Commissioner said the area under agriculture is increasing this year, which could also be because that labourers might have come back.

New Delhi, Feb 4: "I own my statement," said BJP lawmaker Anant kumar Hedge on Tuesday amid the raging controversy over his remark on Mahatma Gandhi while adding that he has never said anything against the Father of the Nation.

"All related media reports are false. I never said what is being debated over. It is an unnecessary controversy. I own my statement made on February 1, 2020, in Bengaluru. I never made any reference to any political party or Mahatma Gandhi or anybody else, I was just trying to categorise freedom struggle. That's all," Hedge told news agency.

"I am surprised by the discussion around it. What can I say about something that is not there? There is hullabaloo going on without anything. My statement is available in public forum. If anyone wants to see, it is available online and on my website. Show me if I have said anything against Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru and any other freedom fighters," he added.

The BJP leader continued: "That programme was about Savarkar. With due respect of all our freedom fighters, I was just discussing our freedom struggle, there is no confusion or any derogatory comment on freedom struggle or fighters. Unnecessary nuisance has been created."

Hedge stoked a controversy after he had attacked Mahatma Gandhi by calling the freedom struggle led by him a "drama" and also questioned as to how "such people" come to be called 'Mahatma' in India.

"None of these so-called leaders was beaten up by the cops even once. Their independence movement was a big drama. It was staged by these leaders with the approval of the British. It was not a genuine fight. It was an adjustment freedom struggle," he had said.

While several Congress leaders have condemned his remark on the father of the nation, BJP leaders too has distanced themselves from it.

Top leadership in BJP is unhappy with Anantkumar Hegde over his controversial remark on Mahatma Gandhi, party sources had said on Monday, adding that he has been asked to issue an unconditional apology.
