Sonia Gandhi fans face police batons outside Nehru Maidan

Mangalore, October 18: Even as the motorcade of Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi, who arrived in the city on Thursday evening, entered Nehru Maidan, dozens of fans, who tried to get a glance of their beloved leader at the entrance gate, had to face police's wrath.


At least three people suffered minor injuries when the police resorted to mild baton charge to control the unruly crowds.


Though there was enough space in the maidan, where Ms Gandhi was supposed to address the party workers, a group of enthusiastic people rushed to the entrance, when her motorcade entered in, sources said.


Ms Gandhi's arrival has ignited a festive mood among Congress workers and leaders of coastal Karnataka.


Earlier, union minsters from Karnataka and other senior Congress leaders accorded a warm welcome to the Z plus security holder at Mangalore Airport, who is visiting the BJP-ruled southern state for the second time this year to galvanise partymen for next year's assembly election.


For the first time in many years, large hoardings of Congress leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi filled the city's main roads while the main traffic intersections were filled with banners and buntings, screaming about the existence of the Congress in this BJP bastion.


Ahead of her arrival, Youth Congress activists took out a vehicle rally on the main streets of the city.


During her half-day visit to the port city, she will address prominent leaders of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts and party workers at a mega convention at Nehru Maidan. She will launch the 'Kudroli Gokarnatha Temple Centenary celebrations' and Mangalore Dasara festivities, before flying back to Delhi.


Ms Gandhi's visit to this coastal district assumes significance as Congress is trying to re-establish its popularity in this region which has now become a BJP stronghold.

Davanagere, May 3: Karnataka's Davanagere district on Sunday reported 21 COVID-19 positive cases, said Mahantesh Beelagi, Deputy Commissioner.

The number of COVID-19 patients has suddenly taken a giant leap in the district.

"We had sent 94 samples on May 1, on May 2 we sent 72 samples. Today we sent 164 samples for testing. In the last two days, 21 samples have tested positive for coronavirus, we are tracing to know how did all of them came in contact with COVID-19 infected person," said Mahantesh Beelagi.

"Our surveillance team and police team have started tracing the primary and secondary contacts of all 21 people," he added.
Davanagere is currently in the Green Zone.

Meanwhile, 13 new COVID-19 positive cases were reported in Karnataka till 5 pm on Sunday, taking the total number of cases in the state to 614, according to the State Health Department.

Mangaluru, Apr 6: Agricultural produce vendors have decided to hold an indefinite strike from Monday here in city's Central Market.
 
This move comes in response to district administration’s order asking them to shift to the APMC yard at Baikampady and not heeding to their appeal to allow them to operate from the Market and other areas in the city.
 
The district administration has decided to shift the vendors in order to prevent crowding in the market and maintain social distancing norms.

The Indian government has advised expats in the UAE and the Gulf against travel till flight curbs to their home country are lifted. This follows the clamour from some quarters for special repatriation flights to India.

A senior Indian External Affairs Ministry (foreign ministry) official said Indian citizens are safe in the countries they reside in. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken to leaders of Gulf countries who assured him of their welfare, the Indian foreign ministry said. Meanwhile, the Minister of State for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan,, according to a Malayalam news report, also ruled out special flights.

Responding to a question from Khaleej Times on blue-collar workers' angst following job losses, Vikas Swarup, Secretary West in the foreign ministry said, "Insofar as repatriation is concerned, as you are aware, government has advised against all travel, and Indians have been told to stay where they are, As and when the (21-day) lockdown is lifted, and normal civil aviation resumes, Indians wishing to come back will be able to do so."

According to the latest data from the Indian foreign affairs ministry, there are 1,400 cases of Covid-19 infections among Indian expats in the Gulf region.

Swarup said infected Indians are being treated and kept in isolation in the UAE and Gulf. "Our missions have established contact with all the community leaders and the situation is under control," he said.

Cargo flights operating as usual  

Cargo flights carrying fruits and vegetables from India to the Gulf have not been disrupted and would continue as usual, the diplomat said. "We are also helping with medicines based on the requests of Gulf countries," he said.

Eight million India expats live in the Gulf, including close to three million in the UAE. They account for more than 60 per cent of remittances to their home country.

India's long lockdown of 21 says ends next Tuesday. Indications are that it could be extended. Some states like Orissa have already stretched it till the end of the month and others are expected to follow suit.

The government believes that the disease is now concentrated in 75 districts, and the focus should be on these areas to manage and contain the virus.
