Mangalore, October 20: The Police Martyrs' Day was observed under the joint aegis of Mangalore Police Commissionerate and Dakshina Kannada District Police at the District Armed Reserve Police Office ground here on Sunday.

Addressing the gathering, Principal District and Sessions Judge Ashok G Nijagannavara said that in today's world, people always fought among themselves and tried to hamper the public peace and tranquility. “We forget our own duty and put the blame for it on the police. Only when people of all classes join their hands together can the work of police be feasible and proper law and order can be maintained in the society,” he said.

“The first thing an illiterate would do if he encounters any trouble is go to the police station. It is distressing that instead of focusing and lauding the brave policemen for the good work they do, a lot of times we tend to pick out small shortcomings and blame them for it. This is not a good attribute of any society. It is the police who plug the destructive and anti-social activities in the society. Leaving the comfort of their homes, they watch over us and our homes. It is our duty to honour men who carry out such good deeds,” he said.

Speaking on the significance of Police Martyrs' Day, Mangalore Police Commissioner Manish Kharbikar said that on 21 October 1959, around 20 soldiers were ambushed by the Chinese Army in Ladakh which resulted in the death of 10. Since then, 21 October is observed as Police Commemoration Day, he said.

“Recently, policemen have lost their lives in various episodes while serving their duty. The sacrifice of those 10 policemen acts as inspiration to all police personnel. In the year 1961 – 62, 68 men have lost their lives, and the number has been increasing each year. Last year, 636 policemen sacrificed their lives while on duty, and 566 men have died between September 1, 2011 and August 31, 2012,” he said.

He said that the violent actions of the public were the origin for turmoil and disorder. To avoid this, the citizens have to become aware and should not indulge in violence, he said.

IGP (Western Range) Pratap Reddy said that the work of the personnel in police department was becoming increasingly complicated. Our work will be fruitful when people are cooperative and supportive, he said.

DK Superintendent of Police Abhishek Goyal welcomed the gathering and read out the list of 566 police martyrs who had lost their lives while on duty between September 1, 2011 and August 31, 2012.

The 566 police martyrs who had lost their lives this year were remembered on the occasion. Senior officers from various police units placed floral wreaths at the Martyrs' memorial to pay their tributes.

The police flag was lowered at half-mast following three rounds of gun fire to commemorate the martyrs.

Bengaluru, May 29: A cost-effective state of the art glove box testing booth for swab collection was inaugurated by Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar at Victoria hospital.

Inaugurating the specially designed booth for safer, easier and quicker testing, Medical Education Minister Dr Sudhakar said that the portable booths can be used at border check posts and hot spots.

"The testing method involves the collection of samples from inside a box of aluminium and glass. The suspected corona virus-infected individual, whose samples are being taken, has to walk up to the booth and stand in front of the glass exterior. The healthcare worker inside the kiosk collects the sample and then, follows the sanitisation process before proceeding to take the next sample. The collection process, fully contactless, gets over in five minutes," the Minister said.

Dr Sudhakar also said: "This booth significantly reduces manpower requirement and the need for PPE kits. The main advantages of this procedure are that it needs fewer healthcare workers and strictly adheres to the norms of social distancing.

The booth is low-cost. Each model costs about Rs 15,000-20,000."
It is also portable and can be mounted on a vehicle and transported to any location.

It can be particularly useful for collecting samples in hot spots and border checkpoints, he added.

Bengaluru, Apr 18: Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar on Saturday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to deposit at least Rs 10,000 in bank accounts of people belonging to the unorganised sector.

"The unorganised sector comprises barbers, dhobi, cooks, carpenters, sweepers, drivers and autorickshaw drivers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not mention anything about giving subsistence to these people," Shivakumar, told ANI, referring to the Prime Minister's address earlier this week.

Modi had announced the extension of the ongoing nationwide lockdown till May 3 in order to curb the spread of coronavirus.

"I appeal to Prime Minister Modi to register the members of the unregistered sector under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) or deposit at least Rs 10,000 to the bank accounts of each of the members of unorganised sector to help them survive the lockdown," he added.

Though the Congress party will continue the central government and state government's fight against coronavirus, he said, both the governments need to help people who are part of the unorganised sector.

"The farmers have told me that due to the lockdown they are ready to sell the vegetables, which once used to be sold at Rs 100 per kg, at even Rs 5 per kg," he said.

Speaking on the suggestions he made to Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, Shivakumar said, "I requested the Chief Minister to send a team to do a videograph and make an assessment of the on-ground situation. However, till now, no one has gone."

Bengaluru, Mar 25: The COVID-19 count in Karnataka went up by 10 on Wednesday, reaching 51. The 10 new positives included two girls aged seven and nine who contracted the infection from their father.

The 34-year-old man had returned from Amsterdam on March 19 and tested positive as the 17th confirmed case in Karnataka.

Though his family were kept in isolation and under quarantine in their house, the children developed a cold. They were confirmed for COVID-19 infection while their mother is still negative.

The government remained tightlipped over whether or not a 70-year-old woman from Gouribidanuru who was put under house quarantine and died on Wednesday morning, tested positive for COVID-19. Government officials would neither confirm nor deny anything on the results of tests on the woman.

This evening’s bulletin issued by the Karnataka health department continued to indicate the strong correlation of coronavirus infection and foreign travel.

Among the positive cases identified today were

A 63-year-old Bengaluru man and his 59-year-old wife, with a history of travel to Brazil and Argentina.
Two 26-year-old men with a history of travel to Spain and arrived back in Bengaluru via Dubai.
Two others, a 63-year-old woman and her 69-year-old husband, had a history of travel to Athens and London.
A 34-year-old man, a resident of Udupi, who returned from Dubai
A 37-year old woman, a resident of Chitradurga, with a history of travel to Guyana and arrived back in Bengaluru via Delhi
Speaking to the media, medical education minister K Sudhakar said health officials were apprehensive the positives may go up tonight.

Of the corona positive cases detected in Karnataka so far, three have been discharged after quarantine, and 47 patients are in isolation at designated hospitals in a stable condition. There has been one fatality.

As per a recommendation by the high-level health committee, the government has decided to convert the Bowring Hospital into a coronavirus treatment hospital facility along with the Rajiv Gandhi Hospital for Chest Diseases and Victoria Hospital.

“The number of positive cases are growing at an alarming rate and the government needs more treatment facilities. The government is for burning of COVID-19 death cases. However, due to some religious practices, it has been decided they would be buried in 8 ft deep pits,'' Dr Sudhakar said.
