Masked men attack SSF workers while putting up religious banners

Mangalore, October 24: Two persons were seriously injured when a group of masked men, alleged to be Sangh Parivar activists assaulted the members of Sunni Student Federation who were engaged in putting up banners of a religious function at Vamanjoor, near here.

 

The injured identified as auto-rickshaw driver Haidar Ali and his brother Hasan Ali, were rushed to a nearby hospital after Monday night's incident.

 

The incident occurred when the duo along with two clerics of local Sunni Masjids were putting up banners of convocation of Kasargod based Muhimmath Sunni education institution.

 

According to Haidar Ali, a group of three masked men, clutching swords, assaulted them for 'no reason.' He said one of them was Ganesh of Kethikal.

 

“We pleaded them not to assault us and convinced them that we would remove all the posters and banners if they had any objections. However they did not pay heed to our plea”, he said.

 

Kavoor police, who have registered a case in this regard, said that the reason behind the attack is yet to be ascertained.

 

Condemned

 

Meanwhile, the Mangalore and Mangalore North Assembly Constituency units of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) have condemned the assault on the youth.

 

In two separate press releases Nawaz Ulla and Saifullah Vamanjoor, Presidents of the respective units said that the police should immediately arrest 'Sangh Pariva' activists who are responsible for this attack.

 

They demanded Deputy Commissioner N S Channappa Gowda to take effective steps to ensure that such incidents do not happen again.

Bengaluru, Jul 9: Bringing to the fore the dangers frontline workers face in combating the deadly coronavirus, 395 policemen have tested positive for the infection since the outbreak of the pandemic in Bengaluru. This includes five deaths, Inspector General of Police and Additional Commissioner of Police (Administration) Hemant Nimbalkar told media persons.

He said as of Thursday, 190 have been cured while 200 are under treatment. Twenty police stations have been sealed, he added.

He claimed the Bengaluru police has suffered the most compared to any department, organisation or institution because the force is deployed in the field and dealing with the situation.

The infection among police is highest despite training being given to them on how to protect themselves from the coronavirus.

According to him, every morning duty charter is given to the police personnel where they are told how to avoid getting the infection and handle the situation if they find symptoms of coronavirus.

"Despite taking all the precautions, infection in our department is high because we are the ones who are on the road.

We are meeting hundreds of people whom we don't know, whether they are Covid infected or not," Nimbalkar said.

Along with the policemen, their families too are at risk of contracting the virus.

An assistant sub-inspector at VV Puram police station was the first casualty in the Bengaluru police on June 13.

A heart patient, who was on leave due to ill health, he collapsed at home and died.

Bengaluru, Apr 7: With reporting of 12 positive cases of COVID-19 since last evening, including three women, the total number of confirmed cases in Karnataka increased to 175, including four deaths.

According to official sources, while three fresh cases of COVID-19 were reported from Bengaluru, two each had been reported from Bagalkot, Kalaburagi and Mandya, followed by one each at Gadag and Bengaluru Rural districts.

After a gap of over three weeks, two more fresh cases had been reported from Kalaburagi, which had reported the first death of the country.

Mangaluru, Jul 2:  A seven-day old baby boy was tested positive for Covid-19, Health Department officials said on Thursday.

The infant is currently undergoing treatment at a designated Covid Hospital here. The baby was born at a private hospital in the city last week. 

According to the officials, it was not known as to how the newborn contracted the infection.
