Mangalore, October 25: As the festival of Navaratri of Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatha Temple, popularly known as 'Mangaluru Dasara' concluded here with a grand and colourful procession on Wednesday evening, all other festivities associated with it came to a close as well.

The enthralling dance-form of 'pili vesha' (tiger dance) which is a unique and integral part of festivities in 'Tulu Nadu' is often seen on streets being performed to drum-beats. Artists get together and perform in groups, collecting donations as they go by. Young children and adults alike dance to captivating beats of drums and perform somersaults and sometimes dangerous acrobatic acts to capture the attention of people.

One such troupe is the 'Friends Circle' from Ballalbagh, Mangalore, who performed 'pili vesha' in processions and gatherings throughout the Dasara festival to keep their audience entertained.

Around 20 members in the troupe painted their bodies with attractive colours to make themselves resemble tigers, leopards and cheetahs. With mane-like headgear and tiger masks, they are all set to go. Performing together, this troupe like many others in the region visit houses and other places along with their drummers and perform all through the day in the city, sometimes in return for gifts and money from their audience.

Although the performers religiously take part in all the celebrations, it is also a time for some of them to earn some extra money during the festive season of Dasara. A large number of people usually gather to watch their acts that are unique to Tulunad. Watching the members of the troupe flip high in the air is a delight to everyone, irrespective of age.

Mandya, Feb 9: A youth from Arechakanahalli village of Maddur taluk on Saturday allegedly committed suicide in Bengaluru after his lover got engaged to another man.

The body of the deceased, Darshan, was found hanging from the celising of his room in Bengaluru. According to Darshan's relatives, he was in love with a girl for the past few years.

Darshan had wanted to marry her, much to the chagrin of her parents, it is said.

The girl's parents had allegedly warned him of dire consequences if he did not stay clear from their daughter. In the meanwhile, she got engaged to another man.

Feeling left out, Darshan allegedly ended his life. In the suicide note, Darshan has held his lover and some of her relatives responsible for his death. He has also claimed that his family was facing death threat from her family.

There are rumours that Darshan might have been killed after he refused to stop seeing the girl. Though both the families are from the same community, their financial status, sources said, is different.

According to the relative of Darshan, the girl is a close relative to a former minister from Mandya district.

"There are reasons to suspect that Darshan might have been murdered, and a suicide note may have been planted at the crime spot.

A proper investigation should be conducted to unearth the truth," he said.
