Bangalore, October 26: The family members of Dr Usman Ghani, who was reportedly detained in Saudi Arabia at the behest of Karnataka police, have appealed Indian government to extend support to him.

Addressing a press meet in the city on Thursday Dr Ghani's mother Fatima Khan said that her innocent son has been languishing in Saudi Arabia for the past 15 days without charges, after he was picked up by the police there.

“I?demand that the Indian government extend the same support to all its citizens, which has been given to all the other victims of detention in foreign nations,” she said.

Dr Ghani's family members from Dharwad alleged that the victim was picked up by Saudi Arabian authorities from his work place at the National Guard Hospital in Riyadh at 2 pm on October 8. “I?was informed by my daughter-in-law of Dr Ghani's arrest. Following the information, we have been appealing to the Indian Embassy to help us and secure his release, but to no avail,” said Fatima.

It could be recalled here that Dr Ghani, who had been picked up for questioning in Hubli in 2008 in connection with a terror attack, was later given a clean chit by the Karnataka police. He was then working with the Seventh Adventist Hospital in Ottapalam in Kerala.

“Once given a clean chit, he was allowed to go to Saudi Arabia. Why are the authorities still after him?” questioned Dr Ghani's mother.

The family has claimed that under Section 36 of the Vienna Convention on Consular Services, ratified by India and Saudi Arabia, it has been stated that the consular officers shall have the right to visit a national of the sending state who is in prison custody or detention, to converse and correspond with him and to arrange for his legal representation.

“However, none of the laws have been implemented by both the nations. There has been no attempt by Indian authorities to help us,” alleged Fatima.

Mysuru, Jan 19: Karnataka Rural Development and Panchyat Raj Minister K S Eshwarappa on Sunday claimed that Popular Front of India and Social Democratic Party of India have been indulging in anti-national activities.

Talking to media persons here, he said the government is mulling to ban and take action against PFI and its political arm SDPI.

It was recommended even during the previous government, but it was not taken seriously, he added.

He said that the BJP will ensure that all the MLAs who were instrumental in the party coming to power (the then-disqualified MLAs who joined BJP from Congress and JDS recently and won the bypoll subsequently) will not be let down and be given suitable posts in the government.

Mumbai, May 19: Even as banks in United Arab Emirates are trying to trace NMC founder BR Shetty, a prominent bank in India is seeking to recover loans worth Rs19.13 billion from him and his companies.

A local court has also barred him and his wife from selling or transferring some properties while it hears the case.

In the court filing, the Bank of Baroda said Shetty had an obligation to handover the title deeds of the 16 properties and mortgage the assets with the bank.

The 16 properties in several Indian cities including Bengaluru were among guarantees put up by Shetty and his wife against the Rs19.13 billion ($253 million) loans, according to a May 16 court order seen by Reuters. The court in Bengalaru set the next hearing in the case for June 8.

NMC, the largest private healthcare provider in the UAE, was placed under administration in April after months of turmoil. It disclosed in March it had debts of $6.6 billion, well above earlier estimates of $2.1 billion.

Finablr, in which Shetty has a controlling stake, said in April it may have nearly $1 billion more in debt than previously reported.

Mangaluru, Feb 13: After pro-Kannada outfits called for a state-wide bandh today, the police are on high-alert to avoid any untoward incidents.

The dawn to dusk bandh was called demanding implementation of Sarojini Mahishi report which recommended certain percentage of jobs to Kannadigas in private & public sector companies.

There is no official holiday declared for schools and colleges. Besides, all government institutions and private establishments are open.

But, in some parts of Karnataka, autorickshaws and taxis, including Ola and Uber stayed off the roads.

Even though the bandh is unlikely to hit normal life in coastal Karnataka, stones were pelted on a Tirupati-Mangaluru bus in Farangipet.
