Belgaum, October 28: Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code were clamped in certain areas in Khade Bazaar and Market police station limits here following stone-throwing near Khanjar Galli on Saturday.
The orders, which came into effect at 6 p.m. on Saturday, will remain in force for 24 hours.
Trouble started when activists of the Sri Rama Sene tried to prevent an animal, allegedly a cow, from being sacrificed during Eid-ul-Adha celebrations. It was not immediately clear if the animal was a cow or a bull.
As the police tried to disperse the mob, some started throwing stones at shops and the police.
Two or three policemen were injured.
The police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the unruly groups. They also arrested nearly 30 persons.
Additional forces have been deployed at Khanjar Galli and communally sensitive areas nearby.
The tahsildar of Belgaum has imposed prohibitory orders on Khanjar Galli, Khadak Galli, Badkal Galli, Chawat Galli, Shetty Galli, Jalgar Galli, Darbar Galli, Bhendi Bazaar, Kacheri Road, Kaktives, Chirag Nagar and Kangral Galli.
Though the situation was tense in these areas, other parts of the city remained peaceful, the police said.
