Various initiatives will be taken up from November 14 to December 14 in the district to mark Makkala Masotsava, an annual programme to promote child rights.
The committee will organise the month-long programme in association with the district administration, Education Department, Women and Child Welfare Department and Social Welfare Department in Dakshina Kannada.
The major areas to be covered under the programme include, create public awareness towards the need to implement the recommendations National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) report, strengthening the child rights protection system, developing scientific temperament among school children, providing basic facilities to the migrant children, stop children from begging, significance of child line etc. Awareness will be created using various platforms including street plays, distribution of pamphlets, leaflets, organising child line-dosti week programme etc.
Speaking at the meeting, Padi-Valored Convenor Renny D'Souza said that the recommendations of the report submitted by the NCPCR in May has not yet been implemented in the district. Dr Yogish Dube along with his team who had visited Mangalore in May had submitted the report after visiting several Fit institutions, consulting the children and members of Child Welfare Committee, the district administration and other organisations.
Some of the important recommendations of the report include inspection of all 41 Fit institutions in the district by the CWC and submit a detailed report within a month, provide proper child protection, activate the Special Juvenile Police Unit , implementation of the so far submitted NCPR, child mapping within two months, forming the district-level monitoring committee to ensure the implementation of child rights and provide prosecution details of children related cases in last three years.
“Though it has been six months since the report was submitted, nothing has been done to implement the recommendations of the report in the district. Therefore, the Samiti should urge the district administration to take up steps to implement the report at the earliest,” said Renny D'Souza.
Sarva Shikshana Abhiyana Project Co-ordinator Shivaprakash, Sundar Poojary from Women and Child Welfare Department, District Social Welfare Department Officer Arun Furtado, representatives from Child line, NGO Okkuta, Prajna Counselling Centre, State SDMC Federation and others were present.
