Mangalore, October 29: No BJP leaders are in the list of JD(S) inclusion at the moment, including Haladi Srinivas Shetty, said HD Kumaraswamy, Former Chief Minister and JD(S) State President.

Responding to a query on BJP leaders joining JD(S) ahead of Assembly polls, at a press meet in Mangalore on Monday, Mr. Kumaraswamy said that no BJP leader is in the immediate list of people to be inducted into JD(S) including Kundapur MLA Haladi Srinivas Shetty. “I have not met him (Mr.Haladi) personally although it is true that I did speak to him over the phone a couple of times. He has sought more time. No BJP leader is in our list at present. There are a few who are expressing displeasure with the BJP and are looking to part ways but they have not approached us”, he said.

Mr. Kumarswamy said that the BJP's internal conflicts are not facilitating addressing of people's problems in the state. “They are busy with their own infighting. Some responsible leaders within the BJP are giving contradictory and inconsistent statements. How can they concentrate on addressing people's problems? They have instead compounded people's problems. They are yet to waive off farmers' loans but have already cast an additional tax burden of 0.5% VAT” he said.

The Former Chief Minister also said that Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar must place before the people details as to how far has the government implemented the projects and amount set aside for projects in the state budget. Mr. Kumaraswamy also slammed AICC chief Sonia Gandhi for stating that the centre had given Rs. 80,000 crore to Karnataka, saying that the money is tax payer's money which the government is bound to give to every state. “What else have they given other than the minimum basic amount that needs to be given?” he questioned.

SM Krishna's return to the state will not have any impact on JD(S), Mr. Kumaraswamy said. “The SM Krishna of 1999 and SM Krishna of today are different entities. The circumstances then were also different compared to those of today. His return has only fuelled more insecurity and internal conflict in the Congress camp”, he said.

Bengaluru, Jan 25: The local police will provide security for Sri Nijagunananda Swami and his Kittur Nishkal Mantapa Mutt following a letter containing a threat to his life that was received on Friday.

The letter, containing the names of 15 liberal thinkers and activists, was circulated widely on social media and shown on some Kannada TV channels. The letter is addressed to the seer, and it condemns his lectures where he speaks in favour of liberal values.

“The decision to eliminate you will be taken on January 21. You will be eliminated, along with 15 of your followers and people who think like you,” the letter said.

Among those threatened are Nidumamidi Channammalla Swami, Jnyana Prakash Swami, the former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, actors Prakash Raj and Chetan Kumar, writer Chandrashekar Patil, Brinda Karat of the CPI(M) and writer K.S. Bhagavan.

It is not the first time that the seer is getting such threats. Two years ago, Belagavi Police had provided security to the seer following threats to his life. Last year, he got a phone call from a person from Shivamogga district. But the seer did not bother to complain.

This time, the district police will seek a written complaint from the seer. “We will assess the threat perception and the security levels. Adequate security will be provided,” the police said.

The seer is now camping in Jewargi in Kalaburagi district. “We have intimated the Kalaburagi Superintendent of Police of the need for immediate security arrangements. We will take steps to provide adequate security to him once he arrives in Belagavi district,” Superintendent of Police Lakshman Nimbaragi said.
