Mangalore, October 30: By countering AICC chief Sonia Gandhi's statement given in Mangalore, H D Kumaraswamy, former Chief Minister and JD(S) leader, has stood by the BJP. It was Mr. Kumaraswamy who was responsible in bringing BJP to power in Karnataka, said B Ramanath Rai, President, DK district Congress.

He was speaking at a protest meet organised by the Congress party against BJP led state government demanding accounts of the funds released by Centre to the state, in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Mangalore on Tuesday.

Congress had initiated pension programmes right from the time of Devraj Urs but never sought publicity for it, unlike BJP. The district has received grants of Rs.200 crore from the Centre. 52 crores under Sarva Shikshana Abhiyaan, 15 crores under NREG, besides funds for multi village programme, 'Bisioota' and several such programmes have been granted by the Centre but the BJP government is complaining of lack of cooperation from the Centre. The BJP is misguiding people by stating that it is shelling out expenses for projects from its own pocket, Mr. Rai said.

Stating that he fully agrees with Ms. Gandhi's demand that the state government must give account details of Rs.80,000 crore granted to Karnataka by the Centre, Mr. Rai said that the BJP has been cheating the oppressed and minorities. The UPA government has released funds for minority welfare and details of these would be made public when Rehman Khan, the newly appointed Union Minority Affairs Minister pays a visit to Dakshina Kannada district, he said.

Congress leaders Vinay Kumar Sorake, Vijay Kumar Shetty, B Ibrahim, PV Mohan, also spoke.

Mayor Gulzar Banu, Ivan D'Souza, Ibrahim Kodijal, G A Bava, Suresh Ballal, Moideen Bawa, Mamatha Gatty, Shashidhar Hegde, TK Sudhir and other Congress leaders were present.
