Mangalore, October 30: Police have cracked the Kodimbala double murder case and arrested two people in this regard.

Addressing mediapersons at his office in Mangalore on Tuesday, Abhishek Goyal, SP, Dakshina Kannada district, said that accused Mohammed Rafique (33) and Kamaruddin (25) alias Sayyad have been apprehended for murdering Baby alias Thomas and Mary in Undila village of Kodimbala in Puttur taluk.

Mr. Goyal said that CPI Puttur (rural) had taken up the case and arrested the accused. On questioning, the accused have revealed that they were working as construction labourers for Mr. Thomas' house construction and hence had developed rapport with him and had an eye on the valuables belonging to him and his family in the house. They had been planning to carry out murder of Mr. Thomas and his wife from three months, Mr. Goyal said.

On September 25, the accused arrived at Mr. Thomas' house at about 12 in the night and woke him up saying that their motorcycle had got spoiled and asking him to drop them home in his car. When they approached Bolluru Cross, the accused asked him to stop the car and killed him. They took away a gold chain he was wearing and came back to his house in the same car along with his corpse and then killed his wife Mary, taking away her golden earrings. They broke the cupboards in the house looking for money and other valuables and took away two mobile phones from the house. The motorcycle and knife used for murder has been recovered while jewellery and mobile phones stolen are yet to be recovered, Mr. Goyal said.

The accused had the habit of gambling and hence needed money. The murders had created a tense atmosphere in Kadaba. But the murders were purely for financial gains, Mr. Goyal added, while informing that the accused do not have any past criminal record.

'Santhosh Rao had forcible intercourse'

Responding to a query on the rape and murder case of a 17 year old girl in Dharmasthala, Mr. Goyal said that police has gathered evidence that accused Santhosh Rao had engaged in forcible sexual intercourse. But the FSL report is yet to come and it needs to be tallied with that report, he said. However, circumstantial evidences and other evidences point towards his role in the crime, he said.

The SP also said on the occasion that he is open to handing over the investigation to another agency if the family of the victim wants to. “If they give in writing that the case must be handed over to CID or COD, we are willing to hand over”, he said.

'Request sent to increase police staff'

Mr. Goyal on the occasion said that he has requested the higher authorities and the Home Ministry to increase police staff in the district especially in the naxal affected areas.

“We have sent a proposal seeking augmentation of extra staff in police stations of Venur, Punjalkatte and Belthangady. We have asked for 1 PSI, 2 ASIs, 25 constables and 6 head constables for each of the stations. Besides we want to appoint 24 special officers on a temporary basis to serve in these areas. We can even appoint Malekudiyas and local tribal people for these jobs and it will provide them temporary employment and remuneration. In general, the police force in DK is working on 66% of the actual strength and there are 133 vacancies”, he revealed.

Udupi, May 16: Close on the heels of six Covid-19 cases being detected in a little over 24 hours, Udupi recorded its first death of a Covid-19 patient. The victim is a 54-year-old man from Mumbai, who died due to a heart attack on Thursday. His reports came back on Saturday, and confirmed that he had Covid-19. The Udupi district administration has arranged to carry out his last rites as per government designated guidelines for Covid-19 victims.

A medical bulletin issued by the superintendent of Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, stated that the patient was admitted due to a heart-related issue on May 13.

Some members on the team that treated the patient have been quarantined. The hospital’s emergency department will operate as usual, and the outpatient department will operate as usual from 8.30am to 1pm, following government guidelines, the bulletin said. Deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha said that since the patient was from Mumbai, the authorities collected his swab sample for testing, as a precautionary measure.

The man suffered from chest pain, and was initially taken to the taluk hospital at Kundapur from where he was shifted to Kasturba Hospital, due to the seriousness of his condition. The doctors operated on him on May 13, and he suffered a severe heart attack on May 14 and died, the DC said. “Three hospital staff without PPE kits, who attended to the patient, have been quarantined,” the DC said, adding that the operating doctors and nurses had worn PPE kits.

In addition, 5 others who travelled with the person from Mumbai and 57 people with him at the Kundapur isolation centre, have been designated as primary contacts, and 38 others as secondary contacts, and quarantined. The staff at Kundapur taluk hospital too had taken precautions in handling the patient, the DC said. Udupi presently has six active cases, including a 1-year-old child and 5 others, all of whom returned from Dubai on May 12.

Kalaburagi, Jan 1: Fighting penury and partial blindness in one eye, a 39-year-old part-time Kannada lecturer from Kalaburagi district is set to become a commercial tax officer after cracking the Karnataka Administrative Services.

Ambadas Kamble, from Kotana Hipparaga village in Aland taluk, had to take a three-year gap during his school and college years - one-year break after completing Class VII and two years to clear subjects after he failed in II PU examinations. During those three years, he joined his brothers in masonry work to supplement the family's income.

Sweeping aside all hurdles with grit and determination, Ambadas studied Kannada literature for both undergraduate and postgraduate to land the post of a part-time lecturer in a Kalaburagi college. His father died when he was a child, and mother Chandamma supported her family of six - besides, Ambadas, she has two sons and two daughters - by working in houses in the neighbourhood.

Ambadas said he would like to dedicate his success to his mother, who died in the year 2012. "My mother encouraged me to chase my dream - financial difficulties notwithstanding - and allowed me to spend time in the library when my siblings were busy doing menial jobs to fund my education. I'm grateful to my brothers too," he said.

His two brothers are working as masons in Mumbai, having quit studies midway and deciding to support Ambadas - the first in the family to complete graduation. He did high school at Tadkal village in Aland taluk, and college in Kalaburagi.

The lecturer, who's 40% blind in the right eye, cracked the KAS examinations in his third attempt and stood 706th in the state. He has been selected for first-grade officer's post. Alongside, he's doing PhD in Kannada literature.

When his efforts finally paid off, Ambadas landed four job offers: Hostel warden at Morarji Desai hostel, at an SC/ST hostel, post of a lecturer and the tax officer's post. He picked the fourth to serve the state in right earnest.
