Mangalore, October 30: The implementation of National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for undergraduates (NEET-UG) instead of Common Entrance Test (CET) will affect the rural students and those studying under the state syllabus, said Mangalore MLA U T Khader.

Addressing a press meet at district Congress office, here on Tuesday, Mr Khader expressed concern that due to this system, students from poor background in the state would be unable to compete with urban students in the country who had studied CBSE-prepared curriculum in schools and colleges.

“They have to be educated and taught in the CBSE syllabus to be as capable as those studying under the central system. To ensure this, teachers also have to be trained, and basic resources are needed. Either the state government has to take proper steps to train them within the upcoming exam in this academic year or the implement itself has to be postponed to the next academic year,” he said.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has been directed by Supreme Court to conduct the NEET-UG and be made mandatory from the academic year 2013-14. Initially the students were preparing themselves for a common entrance test (CET) in their respective state, but now they have to switch to CBSE model of education.

Road repair of 2-km stretch in Ullal

Mr Khader said that under the jurisdiction of his constituency, the two-kilometre stretch from Rani Abbakka Circle to Mogaveerapatna and Kotepura in Ullal is in a pathetic condition. The road cannot be traversed. In spite of a special grant of 75 lakhs having been sanctioned a year ago, repair work has not yet begun on that stretch. Out of the grant, only 40 lakhs were released, he said.

If the administration does not begin the road repair within 10-15 days, the party will hold a protest together with the residents of surrounding areas, he said, urging the administration to take steps to ensure better roads.

The state government is tied up in internal conflicts which haven't been resolved so far. From the past five months, no development or long-term programmes have been undertaken by the government, he said.

Local Congress leaders Mohan Mendon and T K Sudhir were present at the press conference.

Bengaluru, Jun 12: The Central government has identified Karnataka's Udupi and Yadgir among the "emerging districts of concern" for COVID-19 in the country. Confirming the development, a top official of the state health department said, "they (centre) had reviewed these two districts a few days back...there was a sudden spurt of cases due to Maharashtra returnees turning positive." Sources said union cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba, during a recent video conference with state chief secretaries and health secretaries, had shared his thoughts on the issue.

According to the information shared, districts with more than 400 cases, half of which was reported post-May 18 lockdown relaxation, have been identified as "emerging districts of concern." They are concentrated in the seven states/union territories of Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana. "Udupi and Yadgir from Karnataka, along with Gurugram in Haryana and Kolhapur in Maharashtra have 90 per cent of the cases recorded after May 18," they said.

As on June 11 evening, Udupi had a total of 969 positive cases, out of which 619 are active, while 735 positive cases have been reported in Yadgir, out of which 626 are active. The two districts had reported a total of only 11 cases each as on May 18. While Udupi till last evening had seen 349 discharges, it was 108 in Yadgir.

Both districts have reported one COVID related fatality so far. As of June 11 evening, cumulatively 6,245 COVID-19 positive cases were confirmed in the state, which included 72 deaths and 2,976 discharges.

Bengaluru, May 30: A city corporator in Bengaluru was sent into quarantine on Saturday after he tested positive for the coronavirus infection, officials said.

"Yes, I have tested positive," Padarayanapura municipal ward corporator Imran Pasha told some news channels.

The JDS corporator said he would quarantine himself as per the regulations.

The entire area where Pasha lives was cordoned off.

Health workers reached there in an ambulance and gave him a personal protection gear to wear and he was taken to a designated hospital.

Reacting to the development, Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashoka claimed Pasha hardly paid heed to the COVID-19 regulations.

"He rushes to all those places wherever there are positive cases...," Ashoka told reporters.

Padarayanapura was declared as a containment zone earlier with a few cases coming to the fore.

It was in this area where some policemen and health workers were attacked when they went to quarantine a few primary and secondary contacts of a COVID-19 patient about a month ago.

Following the incident, about 125 people were arrested, and later quarantined after a few of them tested positive.
