Colours splash against malaria at MMV painting event final

Mangalore, October 30: The creativity, scientific temper and the artistic talents came to fore at Lions Seva Mandir, here on Tuesday, as one hundred high school students from over 20 schools participated in the final round of the MMV Art Competition Mangalore.

 

The event is being organised by Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV), Geneva and partnered by Kasturba Medical College, Malaria Cell of Mangalore City Corporation, Dakshina Kannada District Health Department and coordinated by city based NGO Centre for Integrated Learning.

 

Out of over 5600 students who participated in the initial intra-school round, 100 were selected to represent their respective schools in the final round. The theme of this massive Malaria awareness drive through a painting event is 'Declaring War Against Malaria'.  The prizes will be announced and distributed at a function on November 2 at Town Hall.

 

It is for the first time such an innovative and large scale event is being organized to create awareness on Malaria involving students and teachers in a city which stands among the highest Malaria cases in the state.

 

Students expressed in colours, their understanding of the dreaded disease and the preventive measures that can root it out in achieving the objective of `Malaria-Free Mangalore.

Mangaluru, May 27: Mangaluru MLA U T Khader today urged Dakshina Kannada MP and Karnataka BJP chief Nalin Kumar Kateel to pave the way for immediate repatriation of Mangalureans stranded across Gulf countries.

The development comes amidst reports that lack of preparedness on part of the authorities concerned in Dakshina Kannada compelled the Centre to delay the operation of repatriation flights from various Gulf to Mangaluru International Airport under Vande Bharat Mission.

Lakhs of people from Mangaluru region (coastal Karnataka) alone are working in middle eastern countries like Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar. Thousands of them are currently stranded thanks to covid-19 lockdown and are helplessly waiting for repatriation.

Speaking to coastaldigest.com, Mr Khader said he already spoke to Mr Kateel and brought to his notice the plight of Mangalureans in Saudi Arabia and other gulf countries. "There are a large number of pregnant women, senior citizens and patients who need immediate repatriation. It is the responsibility of the elected representatives and district administration to pave the way for the repatriation of our people and arrange quarantine facilities for them," he said. 

"Mr Kaeel is not only MP of Dakshina Kannada. He is also the chief of Karnataka's ruling party. Hence, he must play a crucial role in facilitating the return of Kannadigas in general and Mangalureans in particular," Mr Khader said.

Bengaluru, Feb 23: The sleuths of Custom Department have seized ephedrine worth Rs 5 Crore in courier terminal of Air Cargo complex in Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), the department said on Sunday.

Customs Joint Commissioner M J Chethan, in a statement, said that Central Intelligence Unit, Air Cargo Complex, scanned the package while verifying export consignments and found concealment of some powder. 5.04 kg of Ephedrine worth Rs 5 crore was packed in polythene pouches and concealed between cardboard layers of wedding invitation cards.

Detailed examination of the Wedding cards revealed banned drugs hidden between 43 wedding invitation cards in the package that also contained a few clothes.

Tumuku, Jul 6: Senior Congress leader and Kunigal MLA Dr H D Ranganathm tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday.

The 48-year-old Congress legislature, a doctor by himself, was admitted to Manipal hospital and recovering, he said in a tweet.

Dr Ranganath said he took all precautions, yet could not save himself from the virus and advice people to not to take the contagion lightly.
