Kasargod, October 31: Three members of a gang of inter-state thieves were arrested and around 56 sovereigns of stolen gold and cash worth several lakh rupees were seized by Kasargod police, here on Tuesday.
Rabdeen Salim, 38, of Arunachalam of Thiruvalloor in Tamil Nadu; Abdul Rahmal, 44, of Shiribagilu, near here; and Abdul Rahman, 38, of Chowki, near here, are the arrested, Superintendent of Police S. Surenderan told presspersons on Tuesday.
The police have launched a search for two more gang members.
Mr. Surendran said Rabdeen had taken away 77 sovereigns of gold ornaments from a new house at Melparamba, near here, recently while the house owner was busy preparing for the housewarming ceremony. One of the elusive gang members had hatched the conspiracy to loot the house.
The officer said the ornaments had been recovered from the arrested accused.
After being set free from a Tamil Nadu jail, where he was lodged in connection with another burglary, some four months ago, Rabdeen had committed five similar crimes.
Mr. Surendran said Rabdeen had confessed to have been involved in the looting of a cooperative bank at Neerchal here after murdering the watchman a few years ago.
He said the others arrested had smuggled huge quantities of ganja from Andhra Pradesh in the guise of transporting areca nuts from the district.
