Kumbla man killed in balloon explosion in Sharjah

Mangalore, October 31: A man from Kumbla of Kasarogd district died and three others sustained severe injuries when a hot air balloon accidentally exploded in the emirate of Sharjah on Tuesday night.

The deceased has been identified Abdul Khander, aka Khalid, hailing from Seenthagoli in Kumbla. An expatriate worker from the Indian state of Paschimbanga and two Pakistanis were injured during the incident.

38-year-old Khalid, who spent nearly 16 years in Sharjah, was working as a personal driver.

The incident occurred during the birth day celebration of one of the friends of Khalid. It is learnt that a huge hydrogen-filled balloon was exploded when the people were busy in celebration

Udupi: Admin nod for mechanised boat fishing likely in a couple of days

Udupi, May 4: Udupi Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesha said that mechanised boat fishing will be permitted in Udupi district in another two days.

He further said that the decision was taken after the district was declared as a Green Zone as no fresh cases of COVID-19 were reported from the district in the past several days.

The Deputy Commissioner told the media here that fishing will be permitted but social distancing has to be practised and only 30 boats will be permitted in a day.

Mangaluru to get 15 smart CCTV cameras in sensitive places

Mangaluru, Jan 5: To keep an hawk's eye on the city, 15 prominent and crowded junctions in the city will have the most advanced CCTV cameras installed under the Smartcity project.

The junctions are-- Bejai KSRTC, Pumpwell, Vamanjoor, Padil, Mullikatte, Bejai, Bendoor, Falnir, Morgans Gate, Kulashekara-Shakthinagar Cross, Kottara Chowki, Kuntikan, Rao & Rao Circle, Padavinangady and Kavoor junctions.

According to top police officials, these junctions will receive approximately 75 cameras to check crime and aid in solving the cases of murder and robbery in the city.

A ‘smartpole’ will be installed there with each pole containing about five cameras along with a 360 degree swivelling camera.

BSY launches mass marriage program in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Jan 10: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday launched 'Sapthapadi', a mass marriage program in Bengaluru.

The state authorities will provide a mangalsutra worth Rs 40,000 and Rs 5,000 to the groom. They will also give Rs 10,000 to the bride after marriage.

The state government has also informed that the department has shortlisted some temples where the mass marriages will be held.

Yediyurappa also confirmed that the government will help communities like Muslim and Christians also to organise mass marriage as per their respective rituals.

According to the state government guidelines, issued last year in November, both parents of the couple should attend the ceremony if the duo wants to avail benefits of this offer but those who want to marry without their parent's permission do not stand a chance here.

Also, those wanting a love marriage will not be able to reap the benefits of the scheme. The plan is to conduct about 1,000 marriages in 90-100 temples.

The couples wanting to tie the knot are expected to register themselves 30 days before the scheduled date in the temple. Following which a list will be prepared.
