Mangalore, October 31: All inmates of overcrowded old-fashioned District Sub-jail were on Wednesday morning shifted to new barracks amidst tight security.
The new prison building, constructed adjacent to the old building, had remained unoccupied for the past three years.
The much-awaited move comes a week after group clash in old prison following which P S Ambekar, Assistant Superintendent of Prisons and Jail superintendent, was transferred to Udupi.
More than 50 police personnel along with five police inspectors and CRP force had been deployed during the shifting process to ensure security.
The shifting was carried out after a thorough examination of new prison building by DIGP (Prisons) M C Vishwanathaiah.
Prior to the commencement of shifting process, Hindu religious rituals were performed under the supervision of Mr Vishwanathaiah.
The old prison had around 280 prisoners as against its actual capacity of 150. It is worth mentioning here that several incidents of group clashes within the jail had occurred in the past and the prisoners have been complaining of the lack of protection to them.
Sources said that the department has expended Rs 4 crore on construction of the new facility. The work of providing facilities such as power and water supply were completed, it is said. It is also learnt that some hardcore elements among the inamates will be sent to Raichur and Gulbarga.
