Ronald Anil Fernandes, 18 others chosen for DK Rajyotsava award

Mangalore, October 31: As many as 19 eminent personalities from Dakshina Kannada District will receive the Dakshina Kannada district Rajyotsava award at the Kannada Rajyotsava Day function to be held at Nehru Maidan here on November 1.


Announcing the list of awardees at a media conference here on Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner Dr N S Channappa Gowda said senior journalist and Mangalore bureau chief of Deccan Herald Dr Ronald Anil Fernandes has been chosen for the award in recognition of this contribution to Journalism.


The other winners are and Azeez Baikampady, K T Gatty of Ujire and Shantharam Acharya Kalladka (Literature), Prof S Prabhakar Ujire (Education), Puttur Shreedhar Bhandary (Yakshagana), Prakash Karanth Narikombu, Shreedhar Bhat and Mahabala Poojary Kadambodi (Social service), Rohini Subbarathnam Kanchana (Music), Jeevan Ram Sullia (Theatre), Lokaiah Sere (Folk), Edward Taccode (Agriculture), Mohan Sonangeri (Painting), Sharada Mani Shekar (Dance), Ashok Vardhan (Environment), Ramakrishna Ashram (Organization), Gayathri Navada (Research) and Kodipady Narayana Joisa (Religion and Culture).


Sahana Poojary and Sadananda Prabhu were chosen for special awards for their contribution in sports.


The selection committee for the awards consisted of Deputy Commissioner Dr N S Channappa Gowda, MCC Commissioner Dr Harish Kumar, Dakshina Kannada District Kannada Sahithya Parishat President Pradeep Kumar Kalkura and educationist Dr Mohan Alva.


The awards have been jointly given by the District administration and Kannada Sahitya Parishat.

Udupi, Jul 14: Abhijna Rao, a student of Vidyodaya PU College, Udupi, has emerged state topper in the science stream of II PUC. 

Abhijna has secured 596 marks in the II PUC examination-2020, the results of which were announced on Tuesday July 14. She scored a perfect 100 marks in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science (PCMC). In Sanskrit and English she scored 100 and 96 marks respectively.

She had secured second position in the Karnataka SSLC examinations two years ago.

She is daughter of Asha Rao and Vittal Rao, a retired professor. Her sister Raksha Rao has completed Engineering from NITK Suratkal.

“After securing second rank in the state in SSLC, my target was to score more in PUC examinations. My parents and lecturers have supported me in my studies. All my teachers gave me proper guidance. Vidyodaya College also supported me. I was studying on a daily basis. The exams were easy and I had expected to score above 590. I am very happy to score 596," she said.

Bengaluru, Mar 21: Three new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Karnataka, taking the total number of infections to 18, the state government said on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, Health Minister B Sriramulu giving details about one positive case said, a 32-year old person from Gauribidanur in Chikkaballapura district, who has returned from Mecca has been confirmed for coronavirus infection.

The person has been admitted in a designated isolated hospital for treatment, he said in a tweet.

Details regarding the other two patients are still awaited.

The mid-day situation update by the government also said a circular has been issued to Health and Family Welfare Department officials and staff at all levels to work even on Sundays and general holidays without fail till March 31 in view of COVID-19.

A total of 48 government hospitals and 35 private hospitals have been identified as first respondent hospitals for the case management of COVID-19 cases, it said.

Mental health counselling is being done for positive COVID-19 cases and suspects in the identified hospitals and quarantined persons at home and hospital.

A total of 4,390 counselling sessions have been held till date, it added.

Sriramulu in a tweet, also said the government as a precautionary measure is planning to install thermal test CC cameras at government offices and certain important places.

Mangalore, Jan 15: In one of the biggest seizure of gold in the new decade, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths here have seized five kg of gold valued at Rs two Crore from the Air Cargo Complex at International Airport here recently.

Acting on a tip-off the officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Bangalore and Mangalore in a co-ordinated effort unraveled a unique modus of smuggling of gold through Air Cargo Complex, at old airport, Bajpe Mangalore two days back, According to release issued here on Tuesday evening.

The smuggled gold was concealed in five metal sprockets which were imported by M/s Swaroop Mineral Pvt Ltd of Udupi in the name of “mining conveyor drive chain”.
