Saudi police release Dr Ghani, confirms family

Bangalore, November 1: Dr Usman Ghani, a Bangalore-based doctor, detained in Saudi Arabia, was released on Sunday after being held by Kingdom police for 20 days, family source confirmed.

Dr Ghani working in National Guard Hospital in Riyadh was detained by Saudi Arabia police based on the request of Bangalore police seeking his arrest in relation with controversial terror module case.

Though the Saudi Arabia police detained him for 20 days, his links could not be established resulting in his release on Sunday, family members said here on Tuesday.

“The Karnataka police interrogated him in 2008 and had given him a clean chit. Now, Saudi Arabia police at the behest of Bangalore police detained him for 20 days and found him innocent. I hope that the Indian security forces will not harass my family any further,” Fatima Khan, mother of Dr. Ghani, said.

“The police had picked up both my sons several times and released them. Now even Saudi Arabia police have confirmed their innocence. I hope the security forces would allow us to live in peace,” she said. She said that she was grateful to the Saudi Arabia authorities for their quick and fair enquiry and for releasing Dr. Ghani.

Meanwhile, the Association for Protection of Civil Rights, which supported Dr. Ghani's family, said that it would help Fatima Khan get a visa to visit her son. “Saudi Arabia government had denied visa to Dr. Ghani's family when they wanted to visit their son. Even the Indian Embassy did not help initially,” association founding-member Irshad Ahmed Desai said.

“We are also contemplating taking legal action against the authorities concerned if the family members wanted to pursue the case further,” he said.

Bengaluru, Apr 15: Bengaluru Commissioner of Police, Bhaskar Rao, said that prohibitory order under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), 1973, will remain in place for all parts of the City Commissionerate till April 20.

Section 144 of CrPC prohibits the assembly of four or more people in an area.

"Prohibitory order under section 144 of CrPC will remain in force, in all parts of the Bengaluru City Commissionerate for a period up to 12 am of April 20 with effect from 12 am of April 14," according to Rao.

Karnataka, so far, has 258 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 9 deaths being reported due to the infection, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday.

Karwar, May 29: A five-month-old baby girl was discharged from Kasturba Institute of Medical Sciences (KIIMS), Mangaluru after her successful recovery from Covid-19 on Friday.

The baby was admitted to a hospital in Mangaluru in the third week of April for the treatment of epilepsy and on May 8, the baby, her parents tested positive for Covid-19 and they were also admitted. It is said that they contracted the virus from their 18-year-old relative.

Although the parents were discharged from KIMS on May 23, since the baby had epilepsy, doctors continued the treatment for 19 days.

Mangaluru, May 5: As many as 7,119 labourers, who were stranded in Dakshina Kannada district, were sent to their native places in buses operated by KSRTC’s Mangaluru and Puttur divisions.

After the announcement of lockdown, the stranded labourers were provided shelter in various halls, Town Hall and government hostels in the district.

The stranded labourers from Kuloor, Panjimogaru, Panambur, Baikampady, Yeyyadi, Mulki, Ullal, Bunder, Hoige Bazar and from taluk centres, who wished to take up farming activities in their villages, were sent back in KSRTC and private buses. As many as 266 buses were engaged for ferrying the labourers.

The labourers underwent health check-up prior to their departure to their native villages, Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh said.
