No room for separatism: Minister Ravi in Rajyotsava message

Mangalore, November 1: The wave of separatism must never raise its head in Karnataka and hence the state government is doing all it can to maintain Karnataka's unity, said C T Ravi, District in charge Minister, Dakshina Kannada.

In his address to the people of the district on the occasion of the official Karnataka Rajyotsava celebrations at Nehru Maidan in Mangalore on Thursday, Mr. Ravi said that the government is in no mood to allow waves of separatism in the state to gain momentum.

“We have therefore set up a separate committee to oversee the implementation of the Dr. Nanjundappa report for the development of North Karnataka besides providing thousands of crores of rupees for the purpose. By constructing the Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi and holding sessions there, we have given meaning to the concept of unified Karnataka through administration”, he said.

To protect and encourage the cause of Kannada, the state government has been taking various steps like providing reservation for Kannada speaking employee, cent percent use of Kannada language in administration, pensions for Kannada artists, strengthening of Kannada Universities, grants for Kannada Sahitya Parishad and the like, Mr. Ravi said. The government has been shelling out grants of Rs. 1 crore, Rs. 5 lakh and Rs. 1 lakh for Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelana, Zilla Kannada Sahitya Sammelana and Taluk Kannada Sahitya Sammelana respectively, he added.

The district Rajyotsava Awards were given away on the occasion. Recepients of the award included Ronald Anil Fernandes, Principal Correspondent, Deccan Herald (Journalism), Azeez Baikampady, K T Gatty of Ujire and Shantharam Acharya Kalladka (Literature), Prof S Prabhakar Ujire (Education), Puttur Shreedhar Bhandary (Yakshagana), Prakash Karanth Narikombu, Shreedhar Bhat and Mahabala Poojary Kadambodi (Social service), Rohini Subbarathnam Kanchana (Music), Jeevan Ram Sullia (Theatre), Lokaiah Sere (Folk), Edward Taccode (Agriculture), Mohan Sonangeri (Painting), Sharada Mani Shekar (Dance), Ashok Vardhan (Environment), Ramakrishna Ashram (Organization), Gayathri Navada (Research) and Kodipady Narayana Joisa (Religion and Culture). Sahana Poojary and Sadananda Prabhu were chosen for special awards for their contribution in sports.

The Minister received guard of honour from police, traffic police, NCC and other contingents on the occasion. Schoolchildren performed colouful cultural programmes as well.

Mangaluru, Jun 12: A huge crowd gathered for the grand opening of the newly built 175-metre-long two-lane bridge across Phalguni River on National Highway 169 near Gurupura on the outskirts of the city today.

Even as the photos of the bridge inauguration ceremony went viral on social media, netizens took the elected representatives and the district administration to task for flouting safety norms at a time when the coronavirus cases are continuing to mount in coastal Karnataka.

The bridge was completed in a record time of 15 months. Dakshina Kannada MP and State BJP President Nalin Kumar Kateel and district in-charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojari inaugurated the bridge in the presence of Mangaluru City North MLA Y. Bharath Shetty and others.

The bridge has come as a breather to thousands of travellers between Mangaluru-Moodbidri-Karkala on the busy NH. The age-old steel bridge had become dilapidated and was a cause for concern for road users. The highway is also under the process of getting widened to four lanes.

The bridge was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 30 crore by contractor Sudhakar Shetty of Mugrodi Construction. Work started in February last and the contractor had time till February next.

While the two-lane carriageway is 16 metres wide, the bridge has 2.5-metre-wide pedestrian paths on both the sides. New approach roads of 500 metres each were also part of the project.

Mandya, July 30: BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel on Wednesday said Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has done a commendable job in tackling the Covid-19 situation and floods and that the question of changing the leadership does not arise.

Karnataka on Wednesday reported 5,503 new cases of Covid-19 and 92 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 1,12,504 and the death toll to 2,147.

Speaking to reporters here, Kateel said, "Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi has gone to Delhi to discuss the projects sanctioned to state with the central minister. There is no need to read too much into it."

Replying to a query on graft charges against the BSY government by the Congress, Kateel said, "Congress national president, state unit president are out on bail in graft cases . Why did a Congress leader who calls himself a bande (rock) has approached court seeking stay on CBI probe? Before making any allegations against the government, they should think about 'irregularities' in Indira Canteen and housing schemes," he charged.

Instead of instilling confidence and hope among the people in these testing times, the Congress is unnecessarily creating fear with petty politics, he told reporters in Shravanabelagola, Hassan district.

"The Yediyurappa-led BJP government is working day and night to tackle the Covid-19. Similarly, several non-governmental organisations have joined hands with the government in the fight against the virus. But, the Congress is only creating confusion by issuing baseless statements," Kateel said.

Bengaluru, May 1: Karnataka has reported 11 new cases of coronavirus, taking the State's count to 576, informed the Health Department on Friday.

Out of the total COVID-19 cases found in the State, 235 people have been discharged and 22 people have died.

"11 new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Karnataka from April 30, 5 pm till noon today, taking the total number of cases to 576, which includes 22 deaths and 235 discharges," said the State government COVID-19 bulletin.
