Mangalore, November 1: The month-long awareness campaign against the use of plastic in Mangalore was formally launched on Thursday, the Day of Karnataka Rajyotsava, with thousands of students taking out a massive awareness rally in the city.

Students from various prestigious institutions including medical, paramedical, nursing and engineering colleges, Scouts and guides, NCC and NSS volunteers participated in the walkathon from Scouts and Guides Bhavan, near Mangala stadium to Nehru Maidan.

The event was organised by Dakshina Kannada district administration.

The rally proceeded via Lalbagh, Ballabagh, PVS Circle, Navbharath, KSR, City Center, Hampanakatta and University College before culminating in Nehru Maidan.

Ban officially imposed

District in-charge minister CT Ravi officially imposed the ban on plastic bags, cups and plastic sheets etc. in taluk by inaugurating an awareness rally which will commence from at 7:30 a.m.

Ravi had directed Deputy Commissioner NS Channappa Gowda a few weeks ago to impose the plastic ban in Dakshina Kannada district. Accordingly, DC has issued a circular in this regard and the ban will be in force in the district from Thursday.

Mr Gowda said that 15 days will be given for people to educate themselves against the use of plastic. "A vehicle with two home guards will be deployed to impose the ban. People will be educated against the use of plastic in the initial 15 days. However, later a penalty ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 1000 will be levied from those who violate the order," he said.

"A meeting of shops and establishment owners will be convened to seek their cooperation for the ban. They will be insisted to use alternative bags made of paper, cotton, terry cotton and other biodegradable materials instead of plastic. District administration has already ordered 6,000 bags made of terry cotton material and it will be distributed among petty shop owners and traders to create awareness among them," the DC said.

Action from December 1

Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner Dr Harish Kumar earlier said that if anyone found throwing plastics beside the road, then action will be initiated against them from December 1.

He said the district administration has imposed ban the use of plastics in Mangalore taluk from Thursday. The MCC will take one month time to create awareness among the public.

However, the MCC will abide by the decision of the district administration, in its decision on ban on plastics.

“The segregated plastics will be collected from the houses and will be taken to Pacchanady dumpyard. The dump-yard will have a plastic unit, wherein plastic will be used for manufacturing oil,” he said.

New Delhi, June 27: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led union government of India is not ready to stop all imports from aggressive China in spite of mount calls to boycott Chinese products in India.

The Centre is reportedly considering to stop only non-essential imports from the neighbouring country.

However, the Inward shipment in sectors such as automobiles, pharmaceuticals, certain electronics and others will continue until a domestic alternative is found.

“India will gradually move towards import substitution. It will not happen overnight. In the meantime, attention has to be paid on production and job creation. We cannot throttle our industry. There are certain absolutely essential imports. Needless to say, those will keep going,” official sources said.

Sources said that both the government and the industry are in the process of identifying products that can be domestically manufactured in the medium term. There are certain chemicals, automotive components, handicrafts, cosmetics, agriculture items and certain consumer electronics, which can be manufactured domestically in the short to medium term. The government is doing all it can to raise the capacity of domestic industries.

However, there are certain other imports in the automobile and the pharmaceutical sectors which cannot be done away within the short to medium term. Their domestic production at the moment may not be that cost-effective.

The six-crore strong traders’ body CAIT has been at the forefront of such a demand and has launched a campaign to celebrate Indian Diwali this year with a total absence of Chinese goods.

“Ease of doing business, capital availability at lower rates and globally competitive logistics and energy costs are some of the prerequisites that the government should look into to ensure the growth of the domestic auto component industry,” according to Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) Director General Vinnie Mehta.

Maruti Suzuki Chairman R C Bhargava said, “People who are boycotting Chinese goods have to remember that in some cases it may lead to their being asked to pay more for the same product."

Meanwhile, domestic rating agency Acuite Ratings & Research has analysed the current import portfolio from China and found 40 sub-sectors have the potential to lower their import dependency on China. These sectors contribute to $33.6 billion worth of imports from China and about 25% of these imports can be substituted by local manufacturing without any significant additional investments.

Bengaluru, Mar 14: Amid coronavirus threat, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has ordered shutting down for a week of all places/activities where people gather in large number including swimming pools, shopping malls, schools, colleges, cinema halls etc, state Health Minister B Sriramulu said.

This comes after Yediyurappa chaired an emergency meeting with ministers and senior officials on Friday to discuss the situation.

Earlier, schools in the state had announced early summer vacation for their students this academic year as a precautionary measure. Other public places have been shut down in the state amid the Covid-19 scare.

The shut down in Karnataka comes after various other state governments ordered similar steps. Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Jammu and Kashmir etc. are some of the states where governments have ordered shut down as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

The central government has also taken several steps to contain the virus, including suspension of all visas to India till April 15. Till date, India has reported two deaths and 82 confirmed cases of the deadly coronavirus.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. The virus, which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan last year has spread to more than 100 countries worldwide, infecting over 1,30,000 people.
