International conference on 'religion and law' from Nov 24

Mangalore, October 2: City-based Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Law College and Centre for Postgraduate Studies and Research will be hosting a conference on rethinking of religion and law in India in association with Belgium-based Ghent University.

The four-day conference, beginning November 24 is the fourth of such international conferences. While the first conference was held in Delhi, the last conference was held in the Czech Republic.

This conference is useful for law students in this region because they do not get many opportunities to attend conferences related to law. The presence of only four law colleges in the two coastal districts minimises opportunities to take part in academic events of this nature.

Apart from delegates of different Indian universities, delegates from 22 foreign universities will be taking part. Students, research scholars and teaching faculties will discuss topics ranging from conflicts related to religion in India to religious and traditional values to diverse aspects of religion and laws related to different religions.

BK Ravindra, principal of SDM Law College, said that the aim of organising the conference is to provide better understanding of Indian culture, religion and laws to foreign students.

Eminent personalities like former chief justice of Punjab Rama Jois, Member of Parliament Ram Jethmalani will take part in the conference.

2 cops face action in Karnataka for illegal cigarettes sale

Bengaluru, May 10: Amid the coronavirus lockdown, two police inspectors were suspended for their alleged involvement in the illegal sale of cigarettes.

"Two police inspectors suspended after an enquiry found their involvement in illegal sale of cigarettes during the lockdown in Bengaluru," informed Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sandeep Patil while speaking to news agency.

Govind Karjol ready to quit DyCM post for smooth cabinet expansion

Chikkamagaluru, Jan 28: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Public Works Govind Karjol on Tuesday said that he is ready to quit if the post asks him to do so to pave way for smooth expansion of the Cabinet.

Responding to a question from media persons on the issue here, he said he was ready to quit his post any time.

“If the party asks me to resign now, I will send back my official car and return by bus”, he added.

Further, he opined that there should not be efforts to seek a berth in the Cabinet based on caste.

“Putting pressure on the party based on caste is not right. The party will consider those who worked for the party and also take district-wise representation into account while filling up the vacancies”, he added.

Mangaluru: Thousands travel from Ullal to join anti-CAA protest in Kasba Bengre

Mangaluru, Jan 21: Thousands of people today boarded boats from Ullal's Kotepura to join a massive protest against the amended Citizenship Act and National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Kasba Bengre, here.

People traveling through boats and steamers decorated with national flags, raised slogans during their journey through the river.

The innovative mode of transportation was used by the protestors to reach the venue, as it not only saved time but was also more convenient for the fishermen, a large number of people from this community joined the protest.

The protestors docked their boats at the shore and reached the venue chanting slogans of azadi.
