Mangalore, November 2: The growth of Popular Front of India (PFI) as a strong anti-Hindutva force and emergence as an alternate political option has become a cause of annoyance for political forces cutting across party lines, and hence propaganda against the organization is being carried out from all quarters, said KM Shareef, National General Secretary, PFI.

He was delivering the keynote address at the 'Why Popular Front?' programme organised at Nehru Maidan in Mangalore on Friday.

Muslims, Dalits and members of other backward communities have been subjected to harassment and injustice by successive governments even after independence but PFI has been striving for their cause which is not going down well with critics of PFI, Mr. Shareef said. “Although one finds Muslim names in majority in the organization, PFI does not want to associate with religious issues. Ours is not an organization which delivers religious verdicts. Our aim is to address the problems of the community and fight for the rights of the minorities, Dalits and backward classes. The organization does not intend to create enmity between communities in the society”, he said.

Stating that many allegations hurled against the organization are baseless, Mr. Shareef said that a 'pre-planned' attempt to show PFI in negative light is being made. “People are linking our organization with SIMI. PFI has its origins in 1993 and SIMI was banned in 2001. The allegation that regrouping of SIMI is being done by PFI is absolutely baseless. We are also not Pakistan loyalists as is being said. We believe that we have enough opportunities in India to grow and develop. Pakistan can never develop Indian Muslims. It is also a wrong notion that we get funds from abroad. All our funds collected are from local donors and it is the RSS which receives foreign funding”, he said.

Moulana Usman Baig, National President, All India Imams' Council, in his address said that as mentioned in the Sachar Committee report, the Indian Muslims face challenges in the form of identity, right to equity and security. Muslims are wrongly being projected as traitors and towns where there is considerably good educational activity like Azamgadh and Bhatkal are being projected as hubs of terror. The BJP alone is not responsible for the growth of communalism in India. Congress and Leftist governments have also been equally communal, he said.

Sayyed Sarwar Chisthy, President, Ajmeer Dargah Sharief, Ellyas Mohammed, President, PFI, Karnataka, Marasandra Muniyappa, President, BSP, Karnataka, Abdul Majeed Kodlipete, President, SDPI, Karnataka, Shahida Tasneem, National President, NWF, PB D'Sa, President, PUCL, DK, Krishnananda, Chairman, DSS (Krishnappa Faction), DK, Roopesh Alimar, Chairman, Karnataka Raitha Sangha – Hasiru Sene, DK, were also present besides others.

Bengaluru, Mar 5: Karnataka is facing unprecedented economic difficulties following a Rs 8,887 crore reduction in the state's share in central taxes, cut in allocation under 15th finance commission and a Rs 3,000 crore hit in GST compensation, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa indicated on Thursday.

Presenting the state budget for 2020-21 in the Assembly, he said Karnataka's share in central taxes has come down by Rs 8,887 crore in 2019-20 as per the revised budget estimates of the central government. Therefore the state's revenue resources have been reduced. Apart from this, Rs 3,000 crore GST compensation will also be reduced as collection from the GST compensation cess is not as expected, the Chief Minister said. "With all this it has become difficult to reach to reach the 2019-20 budget targets and to manage this situation within the bounds of the Karnataka Fiscal Responsibility Act, an inevitable situation has arisen this year to cut down the expenditure of many departments," he added.

As per the interim report submitted by the 15th finance commission, there is a reduction in the state's share of central taxes to 3.64 per cent compared to 4.71 per cent fixed by the 14th finance commission. In view of this, there will be a reduction of Rs 11,215 crore in the state's share of central taxes in 2020-21 budget, when compared to the previous one.

He, however, noted that the allocation recommendation of the 15th finance commission is limited to one year only and the complete report for the period 2021-22 to 2025-26 will be submitted in October 2020.

"Our government will soon submit a revised memorandum to the commission to set right the loss caused to the state with regard allocation for the year 2020-21 and give more allocation for the remaining period," the Chief Minister said. He also said, when compared to the previous year, there is an increase of approximately Rs 10,000 crore for 2020-21 with regards to government employees salary, pension and interest on government loans, but there is no proportionate increase in resources as compared to committed expenditure. "Due to this reduction of the state's share of central taxes as per the 15th finance commission report and other developments, serious difficulties are being faced in resource mobilisation efforts of the state," Yediyurappa said. "This magnitude of economic difficulties was never faced in the previous years by our state," he added.

However, the state's own tax revenue collection is excellent during this year, he said. As compared to the previous year, there is a growth of 14 per cent in State GST collection. "Based on this, in the new budget, efforts are being made to manage the reduction in the share of central taxes by stabilising the state's own resources more", the Chief Minister said.

Karnataka recorded a gross state domestic product growth rate of 7.8 per cent in 2018-19 and Yediyurappa said for the current financial year it is estimated to be 6.8 per cent.

Belagavi, Jan 17: Maharashtra Minister of State for Public Health, Medical Education, FDA and Textiles Rajendra Patil-Yadravkar who had come here to participate in the martyrs day programme of Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) was detained by the police and escorted back till the state borders on Friday.

MES had organised its annual martyrs day programme at Hutatma Circle here. Its leaders had earlier been asked by the District Administration and City Police to ensure that none of the political leaders from Maharashtra participate and create law and order problems by their anti-state statements.

Patil had managed to sneak into the city through a route which was not manned by the police. He came in an auto-rickshaw to the programme venue.

Police personnel present for security took him into their custody and later escorted him till the state’s borders with Maharashtra at Kognoli on the Pune-Bengaluru national highway.

MES leaders alleged that the police personnel violated protocol while taking the incumbent minister into their custody and they also roughed him up.

All vehicles entering the city from different routes and particularly from Maharashtra were screened to confirm that political leaders from the neighbouring state do not participate in the martyrs day programme and create problems by their statements that also affect law and order along with linguistic harmony.

It was not known if Patil had landed in the city on Thursday and managed to reach the programme venue without getting noticed by using an auto-rickshaw.
