Mangalore, November 6: Frustrated with the slow paced work of renewal of meter certification, auto rickshaw drivers held a protest at the RTO office in Mangalore on Tuesday.
Speaking to Coastaldigest.com, Shekhar, Leader of Auto Rickshaw Drivers' Union, said that the office was operating with just one staff to handle all certifications and hence the slow paced work was not tolerated by the union.
“They had two three staff handling it before but now just one person is being made to take care of the entire process. We do not blame the concerned staff because we understand that he has to do the billing, sealing and issuance of certificate all by himself. Although the office is scheduled to open at 10:30 am, he would come at 11:00 am. Today he came at 11:30 am and by that time, there were about 120 auto rickshaw drivers waiting for the meter certification work done. The place got crowded and the slow pace work irritated the auto drivers”, he said.
Mr. Shekhar said that after speaking to a higher official at the RTO office, two more personnel were pressed into the section to speed up the work. “We saw that all certfications were made. We had told them clearly that we will not allow the office to close down unless all certifications are cleared. They have given an assurance that two staff would be put in the section from tomorrow”, he said.
