Many in Manipal participate in US presidential election

Udupi, November 8: The US Consulate General (Chennai) organised an unique 'Election Watch' event in the background of on-going presidential elections, at Hotel Fortune Inn Valley View in Manipal on Wednesday.

 

The programme was an attempt to create the atmosphere of virtual reality that brought live the activities and actions in the process of the US Presidential elections.

 

There was an opportunity to cast the vote for the people gathered and express their support to President Barrack Obama and his opponent Republican candidate Mitt Romney.

 

The event unfolded with an informal inauguration by the Manipal University Pro Chancellor Dr H S Ballal.

 

Speaking on the occasion, US Consulate (Chennai) Cultural Affairs Officer Shanna Surendra said US Consulate Chennai decided to reach out to more places this time and the result was the event 'Election Watch' that was held in Manipal and Thiruvananthapuram besides Chennai in South India.

 

US Consulate Chennai itself would always celebrate democratic process through polling by organising such events, she added.

 

Briefing over the preference given to Manipal, Shanna said that Manipal University is a prestigious and specific University around the globe and there are innumerable wonderful people including students' from many countries.

 

“Usually we hold programmes in Chennai only. American public continue to exercise their right every passing event and reaffirm the values of democracy that says by the people and of the people,” she said.

 

The event was exceptional with a panel discussion that was live telecasted over the big screen. Besides, there was also quiz contest over various histories concerning US presidents and the White House.

 

The big screen also brought the election analysis by CNN and IBN and other media outlets live to the spectators.  US Ambassador to India Nancy Jo Powell who addressed the gathering through teleconference said the elections went on lively where both sides have put their cases forward with energy and enthusiasm.

 

Countless Americans walked into polling stations to cast their right, regardless of the outcome. I do know that you can look forward to a close relationship that our two countries share. The relationship with India will continue to flourish. The big story is that who will win the White House, she added.

 

Speaking on the occasion through Google chat, Social media expert and also Journalism Professor in Columbia University Professor Srinivasan briefed over the role of social media network in playing deciding factor. He said the social media network is getting much more into the mainstream and it was obvious with social media network result that Obama could win, he added.

 

The event had dignitaries like US Consulate General Consulator Service Chief Nicholas Manring, Manipal University Chancellor Dr Ramdas Pai and IGP Western Range Prathap Reddy.

 

Finally, the event gave a pinch of know-how to the people who assembled here at Fortune Inn Valley View in India over the presidential elections in US through virtual reality.

Bengaluru, Aug 7: The results of Karnataka Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations will be announced on Monday, August 10.

Primary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar said, "The results will be announced at about 3 pm on August 10."

This year, over 8.50 lakh students appeared for the exams amidst the Covid-19 pandemic fear across the state.

The department conducted the exams successfully despite resistance from various quarters and pressure to postpone the exams.

Mangaluru, May 6: Amidst delay in repatriation of Kannadigas stuck in Gulf countries including UAE and Saudi Arabia, on behalf of the office bearers, the executive committee and members of the Bearys Chamber of Commerce & Industry, its president Mr S M Rasheed Haji and executive committee member U T Ifthikar Ali today (May 6) called on authorities concerned in Dakshina Kannada to persuade them to follow up with the State and Central level authorities.  

The duo met Nalin Kumar Kateel, Dakshina Kannada MP, who immediately contacted Pralhad Joshi, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, over phone and urged him to take up the issue with the external affairs ministry. Mr Joshi told Mr Kateel that efforts are still underway to bring back Kannadigas stranded in Gulf countries. However flights schedules are yet to be finalised.

The duo then met Kota Srinivas Poojary, district in-charge minister, who said that the government is prepared to handle the repatriation flights and passengers. 

The duo also met IAS officer Rahul Shinde, who is in-charge of affairs related to international passengers coming to Dakshina Kannada amid covid-19 crisis. Meanwhile, Zakariya Jokatte, president of Jubail unit of BCCI, spoke to Mr Shindhe over phone.

The official explained that the govt has made elaborate arrangements to conduct medical test of passengers on arrival at the Mangaluru International Airport. 

The passengers will be categorised into A, B and C groups depending on their symptoms and co-morbid conditions. The category A passengers (symptomatic passengers) will be sent to isolation hospitals which may be Covid care centres. Category B passengers (asymptomatic but suffering from co-morbid conditions) will be quarantined at hotels, hostels, guest houses etc. Category C passengers (asymptomatic and healthy) will be home quarantined.

The minister and official also sought BCCI’s cooperation in handling the situation. 

Quarantine accommodation facility 

Yenepoya group has already offered two of their hotels as quarantine accommodation and promised to offer one more.  Entrepreneur U Kanachur Monu and many others too have offered their hotels as quarantine accommodation in Mangaluru. 

District administration has asked Treebo, a hotel aggregator to list such willing facilities on their website.

Mangalore, May 30: The first chartered flight to the city of Mangalore, Karnataka in South India is scheduled to depart from the Ras Al Khaimah airport of UAE on June 1.

The SpiceJet flight, chartered by Praveen Shetty, chairman of the Fortune Group of Hotels and president of the Karnataka non-Resident Indian Forum (KNRI), will repatriate 105 staff members of the hotel group, who have been placed on leave, according to a statement issued here on Saturday.

Consul General of India to Dubai Vipul confirmed the reports and said the flight, which will depart at 0945 hrs, will carry home a total of 180 passengers.
