Mangalore, November 8: The arrest of city based television journalist Naveen Soorinje has triggered protests from activists, politicians and members of media across the state.

While media fraternity has termed the police action against Mr Soorinje as an assault on freedom of press, political representatives from Congress, Janata Dal (Secular) and other parties have strongly condemned the arrest.

Media fraternity staged protests in Mangalore, Bangalore, Bellary and other parts of the state demanding the immediate release of the report of 'Kasturi News 24/7' Kannada news channel.

Around four dozen journalists under the banner of Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists' Union (DKWJU) met Commissioner of Police Manish Kharbikar at his office urging him to take appropriate measures to withdraw cases against Mr Soorinje and Sharan from Sahaya TV who according to them, were wrongly booked in homestay attack case.

Criticising the police for not taking the Union into confidence in the case, the journalists demanded the Commissioner to conduct a re-investigation of the case.

Speaking on the occasion DKWJU president P B Harish Rai said that though police had assured the Union of fair and transparent investigation in homestay attack case, they failed to take media persons into confidence.

“Initially the police had assured as that a joint committee comprising of senior police officers and journalists would be formed before taking any action as far as the case against two journalists is concerned. However, they neither formed such committee nor took us into confidence”, he said.

Members of visual media, who gathered in front of DC office to protest the arrest, lambasted Mangalore police for what they said fixing an honest journalist in false case. In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district they termed Mr Soorinje's arrest as illegal and demanded his immediate release.

They also demanded that two police personnel should be deployed for the security of Mr Soorinje in the prison till his release as many of the inmates have criminal records.

Former union minister B Janardhan Poojary and Congress leader B Ramanath Rai have termed the arrest as an attempt to curb the freedom of press.

Lashing out at Mangalore City Police for the arrest Mr Surinje, Karnataka chapter of Peoples Union for Civil Liberties, has said that all the allegations against him are baseless.

In a media release issued here PUCL state president P B D'Sa said that the journalist was arrested on cooked up grounds by Mangalore Police just because he revealed the truth about the infamous homestay attack of July 28.

Terming the arrest as attack on freedom of press, he said that all should condemn this act of the police. “This shows that the freedom of press is under threat”, he said.

The reason for the arrest of Mr Soorinje is that he exposed that the communal goons had carried out the attack with the active collaboration of the city police, Mr D'Sa said.

“When Mr Soorinje had called the inspector of the jurisdictional police station to Inform about the attack during the incident, the latter did not receive the calls for nearly 15 minutes. This proved that police had prior information of the attack”, he said.

Mr D'Sa also said that police after reaching the spot, enjoyed the act of goons who were assaulting boys and molesting girls in the name of preserving Hindu culture.

Bengaluru, May 1: The Karnataka government on Friday issued a show cause notice to an IAS officer over his recent tweet about coronavirus-cured Tablighi Jamaat members donating plasma for treatment of other patients.

The officer, Mohammad Mohsin, was in the news last year after the Election Commission suspended him for trying to inspect Prime Minister Narendra Modi's helicopter during his visit to Odisha in April. He was deployed as a poll observer.

"More than 300 Tablighi Heroes are donating their plasma to serve the country in New Delhi only. What about? #Godi Media? They will not show the works of humanity done by these heroes," Mohsin said in a tweet on April 27.

A 1996 batch IAS officer from Karnataka cadre hailing from Bihar, Mohsin is currently serving as a secretary in the Backward Class Welfare Department.

The state government said the show cause notice has been issued to the officer in connection with his tweet.

"The adverse coverage this tweet has got in the media has been taken note of seriously by the government, given the serious nature of COVID-19 and the sensitivities involved," the notice, which was accessed by PTI, stated.

The government has sought a written explanation from the officer within five days for violating the All India Services (Conduct) Rules, 1968.

It warned of action against Mohsin as per the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969 if he fails to submit his reply before the deadline.

"The Karnataka government has made it clear that it would not hesitate to act even against powerful functionaries if their actions are damaging to the harmony in the state at a time when all are united in fighting COVID-19," a senior state bureaucrat said.

The Tablighi Jamaat, an Islamic missionary group, shot into the limelight early this year after thousands of its members who attended a congregation in south Delhi's Nizamuddin in March tested positive for coronavirus.

After attending the event, the group's members travelled to various parts of the country, with many of them carrying the virus.

Bengaluru, Jul 1: Eighteen private hospitals here have been slapped with a show-cause notice after a 52-year old patient with influenza-like illness symptoms died here on being allegedly denied admission by them citing "non- availability" of beds.

Health Minister B Sriramulu on Wednesdy said refusal to provide treatment was not only inhuman but also illegal as he tagged a copy of the notice in a tweet.

"Notice has been served to the hospitals taking cognisance of the (media) reports about the denial of admission to a patient in emergency. Denying medical assistance during emergency is not only inhuman but also illegal," he tweeted. According to a report, the son and nephew of the patient took him to the 18 hospitals on Saturday and Sunday but he was not admitted on the pretext of non-availability of beds or ventilators.

The man died later. The Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare issued the show-cause notice to the top authorities of the hospitals under the Karnataka Private Medical Establishment (KPME) Act, 2007.

"By denying admission to the patient, your hospitals have violated the provisions of the KPME Act. You are liable for legal action," the notice said, seeking replies within 24 hours as to why action should not be against the hospitals.

This was a "clear violation" of providing medical assistance and admission necessitated under the agreed provision of the KPME registration. Private medical establishments cannot refuse or avoid treatment to patients suffering from COVID-19 or having symptoms, the common notice added.

The incident comes in the backdop of repeated instructions by the government that hospitals cannot deny admission to the patients suffering from coronavirus or having symptoms.
