Henchmen of Ravi Poojary held for extortion; Money, pistols recovered

Mangalore, November 8: Two accomplices of underworld fugitives Ravi Poojary and Kali Yogish alias Yogesh Bangera were arrested by Mangalore City Crime Branch Police on charges of extortion on Thursday.

Police identified the arrested as Taranath (32) from Suratkal, and Subrahmanya alias Subbu (28). Taranath owns a milk parlour 'Milk Way' opposite BJP office at Kodiyalbail, while Subrahmanya runs a saloon in K S Rao road. Subrahmanya was one of the accused in the murder case of city based human rights advocate Naushad Khashimji, who was gunned down outside his apartment on Sturrock Road in April 2009.

Mangalore City Police chief Manish Kharbikar told media persons that Ravi Poojary and Kali Yogish had been extorting sums of money from builders and businessmen, through Subbu and Taranath.

He said that fugitives were using the Taranath's milk parlour as a booth for money extortion.

On Thursday, having received credible information about a certain builder having dropped off a sum of Rs 1 lakh at the milk parlour, Mr Kharbikar ordered the CCB police team to carry out a sudden raid.

The CCB team led by inspector Venkatesh Prasanna nabbed the duo, and seized Rs 1 lakh and eight mobile phones from them.

Mr Kharbikar said that the money was being given Dinesh and Pratap, who are currently in Mangalore jail in Khashimji murder case.

After raiding the saloon run by Subramanya, police also recovered three pistols, he said.

The case has been transferred to Mangalore North police station for further investigation.

NRI under home quarantine in Kannur dies of heart attack

Kannur, Mar 29: A non-resident Keralite (NRK)

under home quarantine here since he returned from Sharjah recently died on Sunday, officials said.

According to health authorities, Abdul Khader (65), a resident of Kannariparamba, was kept under home quarantine after he returned from abroad on March 21.

Police said the man had no symptoms of coronavirus but was under isolation as per Covid-19 protocol for persons returning from abroad and other states.

"The relatives of the deceased took him to hospital after seeing him unconscious in his room. However he died before reaching the hospital," police said.

Quoting medical college authorities, the Mayyil police said he died of cardiac arrest.

However, the health officials said they will test his blood sample to ascertain whether he was affected with novel coronavirus.

The body has been kept at the Kannur medical college and will be handed over to his kin only if the result of his blood test is negative, sources said.

Congress creating confusion among Muslim over CAA, claims BSY

Bengaluru, Jan 5: BJP leader and Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa once again blamed the Congress of creating 'confusion' among the Muslim community over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act-2019 while launching a door to door campaign to dispel such rumors.

Yediyurappa was on a door-to-door campaign to make people aware of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and to allay their fears.

"Unnecessarily, the members of Congress are creating confusion among the Muslim community. I assure you that not a single Muslim will be affected because of CAA," said B. S. Yediyurappa.

"Almost all previous Prime Ministers have supported it, now Congress is creating a problem so as to create confusion among Muslims. That's why we are out on the door-to-door campaign," he said.

The Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, seeks to grant Indian citizenship to Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Parsi refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh and who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.

Tribal students to be deprived of education if Karnataka introduces online teaching

Mysuru, Jun 18: The Karnataka government's proposal announced on Thursday to hold online classes for students amid concerns over COVID-19 has not gone down well with thousands of tribal students residing in villages across the state.

A team from Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) visited a few tribal hamlets in Mysuru and Kodagu recently and found that the students, unlike their urban counterparts, lack accessibility to not just smartphones and computers, but basic necessities like power supply.

''When such is the situation in the tribal hamlets, how can you expect students to catch up on their studies if classes are held online?'' wondered M L Parashurama Member, KSCPCR, who toured villages like Thithimathi, Beematagere, Devamachchi and Gaddadi in Kodagu's Virajpet taluk, besides Bavali, Balyadi, Machchuru, and Anemone in Mysuru's HD Kote taluk along with Chairperson Antony Sebastian.
