Banking business in DK surpasses Rs 34,600 crore

Mangalore, November 9: The banking sector in Dakshina Kannada witnessed a business growth of 27 per cent achieving a level of Rs 34,645 crore on June 30 this year.

 

Announcing this at a review committee meeting on performance of banking sector during the first quarter of 2012-13, Deputy General Manager of Syndicate Bank stated that growth in deposit of rural branches was nearly 41 per cent surpassing that of branches in urban areas which registered growth of 28 per cent.

 

Chief Manager of Lead Bank (Syndicate Bank) Hemanth Bhide said that banks have surpassed statutory targets with regard to lending to priority sector, farm sector, weaker-section advance, lending to minorities and credit to women. Banks have surpassed quarterly targets under schemes like Udyogini for women beneficiaries, Chaitanya for backward classes, Swawalambana for minorities, Tribal Sub Plan for scheduled tribes and Special component scheme for scheduled castes.

 

Asst General Manager of NABARD Prasad Rao observed that the district has potential to emerge as a major centre of goat farming in the country in the near future.

 

Project Director of District Urban Development Centre Takat Rao said that progress under 'Namma Mane' needs to be improved and requested controlling offices of banks to sensitise branches about the scheme.

 

Presiding over the meeting, CEO of Zilla Panchayat Dr K N Vijayprakash said that the pending level was very high under Vajpayee Housing Scheme and requested controlling offices of banks to ensure credit decisions on applications were taken by branches within 15 days. He observed that the decision taken on promoting goat farming in the district had started yielding results and complimented the bankers and entrepreneurs for the initiative.

 

Manager of Reserve Bank of India, Bangalore, Vijaykumar A, shared his opinions on the occasion. Lead District Chief Manager proposed vote of thanks.

Mangaluru, May 27: Mangaluru MLA U T Khader today urged Dakshina Kannada MP and Karnataka BJP chief Nalin Kumar Kateel to pave the way for immediate repatriation of Mangalureans stranded across Gulf countries.

The development comes amidst reports that lack of preparedness on part of the authorities concerned in Dakshina Kannada compelled the Centre to delay the operation of repatriation flights from various Gulf to Mangaluru International Airport under Vande Bharat Mission.

Lakhs of people from Mangaluru region (coastal Karnataka) alone are working in middle eastern countries like Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar. Thousands of them are currently stranded thanks to covid-19 lockdown and are helplessly waiting for repatriation.

Speaking to coastaldigest.com, Mr Khader said he already spoke to Mr Kateel and brought to his notice the plight of Mangalureans in Saudi Arabia and other gulf countries. "There are a large number of pregnant women, senior citizens and patients who need immediate repatriation. It is the responsibility of the elected representatives and district administration to pave the way for the repatriation of our people and arrange quarantine facilities for them," he said. 

"Mr Kaeel is not only MP of Dakshina Kannada. He is also the chief of Karnataka's ruling party. Hence, he must play a crucial role in facilitating the return of Kannadigas in general and Mangalureans in particular," Mr Khader said.

Mangaluru, Jan 23: Members of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) on Thursday held a protest against the Karnataka government, accusing it of shielding Aditya Rao, the main accused of planting an improvised explosive device (IED) at the Mangaluru airport on January 20.

Meanwhile, the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Court has sent the accused Aditya Rao to 10 days police custody.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Bengaluru Police said that the procedure is being followed to hand-over to the Mangaluru Police a suspect who surrendered before it two days after planting an improvised explosive device (IED) at the Mangaluru International Airport.

The IED was later defused in an open field by the personnel of the bomb disposal squad.

Mangaluru, Apr 4: With the district administration formally confirming three new cases of covid-19, the total number of coronavirus positive cases in Dakshina Kannada today mounted to 12. 

A 43-year-old man from Thumbey in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada had been to Delhi on March 11 due to personal work and returned on March 22. His throat swabs were sent for testing on April 2 though he was healthy. Today the report of the test claimed that he was infected with covid-19. However, he is still said to be healthy.

In another case, a man from Udupi, who had returned from Dubai on March 21, was under medical observation after he landed at Mangaluru International Airport. The district administration today claimed that he too is suffering from the covid-19. 

A resident of Thokkottu, on February 6, had travelled to Mumbai and then visited Delhi. On March 6 he had returned to Mangaluru. On April 2, his throat swabs were sent for testing and the report today showed positive.

All three have been admitted to Wenlock Hospital for treatment.
