1,303 graduates get degrees at NITK convocation

Mangalore, November 10: As many as 1,303 students of National Institute of Technology-Karnataka (NIT-K) who graduated during the academic year 2011-12 were awarded various degrees at the 10th convocation held on the premises of the institute in Surathkal, near here on Saturday.

 

Addressing the young graduates, Professor of Kumamoto University Prof Shuichi Torii pointed out that India's history of mathematics and education has played a major role in making it a leader in information technology.

 

He said the future careers of the students would revolve around not only India, but the whole world, thus giving the ability to compete within an environment that transcends borders and nationalities. “We are said to be currently living the global age. Developments in transportation have made our world a relatively small place”, he pointed out.

 

Speaking on the occasion NIT-K Surathkal Board of Governors Chairman Sushil Chandra Tripathi exhorted the new graduates to be excellent technology integrators, develop additional skills in entrepreneurship and take up leadership and management roles and practice professional ethics.

 

Calling upon the students to develop problem-solving skills, professionalism,a motivation for life-long learning, aptitude to work in multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-lingual teams and a comprehensive view of economic, social, cultural and environmental impacts affecting technologically-driven societies, you are likely to make an impcat,” he said.

 

The students, who were awarded degrees, include 652 B Tech graduates, 456 M Tech graduates, 75 MCA graduates, 35 MBA graduates, 46 MSc graduates and 34 PhD holders.

Mangaluru, Jun 15: A father and his four-year-old son were killed when their motorcycle was hit by a lorry from behind at Bakampady junction on the outskirts of the city.

The Police said the deceased has been identified as Abdul Bhasheer, a resident of Krishnapura and his son Shayan. 

On Sunday evening, Bahseer was going from Mangaluru to Krishnapura by the motorcycle along with wife and son when a speeding lorry "dashed into the motorcycle from behind and knocked them down''.

The four-year-old son died on the spot while Basher and his wife were rushed to the hospital. However, the husband succumbed to injuries at the hospital on Monday. Local police registered a case in this connection.

Mangaluru, Jul 11: Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh has set up an expert committee to look into the cause of deaths of covid patients in Dakshina Kannada.

The development comes after eight more fatalities including that of a CISF personnel attached to MRPL, were reported in the district on Friday.

The district has recorded 23 deaths since July 1 and 38 death cases have been reported in the district since April 19.

Of the 38 deaths, five were from outside the district. All the eight patients, who lost their battle to the virus in the district on Friday, were suffering from co-morbidities.

According to the govt bulletin on Covid-19 cases, comorbid conditions, like kidney failure, brain tumour, TB, pneumonia, liver damage, high BP, diabetes and others, were the main reasons behind the Covid-19 deaths reported in the district.

Bengaluru, Jul 23: The Siddi community in Karnataka got its first lawmaker as Governor Vajubhai Vala nominated five persons, including Shantharama Budna Siddi, to the Karnataka Legislative Council on Wednesday.

Shantharama Siddi had been working as a social worker and was a post holder at the Vanavasi Kalyan Prakalpa, a tribal welfare initiative of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

The Siddis, an ethnic group in India, are said to have descended from the people of the East African region. They are included in the list of Scheduled Tribes (ST) in Karnataka.

Apart from the Shantharama, the inclusion of CP Yogishwar, who had left Congress to join BJP in 2017 but failed to retain his seat in the 2018 Assembly polls, is also considered as a big decision.

Adagur H Vishwanath, another former JDS leader, who had quit his party and joined BJP but failed to retain his seat has also caught the attention of the people.

Further, Governor Vala has nominated Talwar Sabanna and Bharathi Shetty to the Upper House in the state.
