Udupi, November 11: Activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) have decided to forcibly enter the Sri Krishna temple in Udupi on December 27 to protest against discriminatory serving of food at the centuries-old mutt.

“Last year, we tried our best to enter the temple, but the police prevented us. This time around, we have decided to enter the temple forcibly, come what may,” State CPM?secretary and former MLA?G V Sriram Reddy told reporters at Gulbarga on Saturday.

The CPM has taken serious note of Brahmins and others being fed separately at the mutt, Reddy said and sought an end to the practice.

To create awareness against the practice, the party will launch two jathas - from Kukke Subramanya and Byndoor - on December 19. Both jathas will converge on Udupi on December 27 and CPM members will forcibly enter the mutt established by Madhwacharya in the 14th Century.

The CPM, which has launched a movement against 'made snana' (the practice of Dalits rolling over leftover food eaten by people of the upper castes) at the Kukke Subramanya temple, has criticised the government for deciding to continue the practice in another form called 'yede snana.'

In response to a writ petition filed by Veerabhadra Channamalla Swami against 'made snana', the government has filed an affidavit stating that it will ban 'made snana' in the present form and continue 'yede snana', enabling devotees to roll over banana leaves containing food offered to Lord Subramanya.

“It is unfortunate that the High Court has agreed to it. But we don't agree. We want a total ban on any such practice,” Reddy said.

He alleged that the concept of 'yede snana' was not that of the government, but of Vishveshateertha Swami of the Pejawar Mutt.

Bengaluru, Jul 22: Congress MLA Priyank Kharge has questioned the Karnataka government on the alleged breakdown of oxygen in the intensive care unit (ICU) at ESIC hospital in Kalaburagi, saying he had got complaints that eight persons who were on ventilators had died.

He asked the government if it is "deliberately" hiding something about the patients that were admitted in ESIC.

"I have got complaints that eight people who were on ventilators are dead in ESIC Kalaburagi because there was oxygen breakdown in ICU. ESIC has not been admitting patients as the issue has not been resolved. Nobody is confirming or denying it. Is the Government deliberately hiding something?" he asked.
Kharge also accused the government of not having adequate facilities to combat COVID-19 in different parts of the state.

"I hope I am wrong, but if it is a fact, this ascertains that the administration has lost control over Corona pandemic in the district. No addition testing centre. No beds are available. PPE Kits and medical waste is thrown in Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS)," he added.

According to the Union Health Ministry, there are 67420 COVID-19 cases in the state.

Mangaluru, Feb 5: ‘Forum for the justice of December 19 Mangaluru firing victims’ has demanded that the policemen who are responsible for the death of two innocent men in Mangaluru one-and-a-half months ago should be booked for homicide.

49-year-old Abdul Jaleel Kandak, a father of two, and 23-year-old Nausheen Kudroli, were killed in an arbitrary and unwarranted police firing during a disturbance occurred due to police baton charge in the city on December 2019.

Addressing a press conference, Forum’s convenor Abdul Jaleel Krishnapur said that a judicial inquiry commission should be set up to probe into the police firing which claimed two lives and injured many other innocent civilians.

“Already a murder case should have been filed against the policemen who opened fire on the people.  Instead, false cases have been booked against many innocent people including the victims. This is a blot on the society,” he said.

He urged the government to direct the police department to drop false charges registered against the victims and take necessary action against the culprits in khaki.

He said that the Form demands Rs 25 lakh each compensation for the kin of the two men murdered by the police and Rs 15 lakh compensation for those who injured in police firing on December 19.
