Konkani translation of Moily's 'Tembare' released

Mangalore, November 11: The Konkani translation of 'Tembare', a novel penned in Kannada by M Veerappa Moily, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, was released at the World Konkani Centre in Shaktinagar, Mangalore, on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Moily said that there is a need for the society to recognize the power of the rich Tulu culture. “In the next 15-30 years, India will obtain demographic dividend. India will be a nation of youngsters and helping them retain culture is of utmost importance. Tulu culture can infuse life into the cultural needs of the society”, he said.

Quoting a few references from his novel 'Tembare', Mr. Moily said that the novel begins at Basavakalyana which witnessed a movement emerge. “It was a movement against monoculture and upheld multiculturalism”, he said while also stating that Tuluva people, although illiterates, were propagating theories of reforms. The piece was not written with mere imagination, Mr. Moily said, while informing that he had conducted many interviews and researches, taking guidance from experts.

Ramesh Lad of Goa, who translated the book in Konkani, said that he enjoyed translating the book as it is full of folklore. He also said that he decided to retain the title of the book as 'Tembare' so that new Konkani readers make an attempt to discover what it means out of curiosity.

Basti Vaman Shenoy, Sardar, Vishwa Konkani Sardar, sharing his thoughts on the occasion said that the novel gives a good picture of Tulunadu and the Tulu culture, while informing that he will also make efforts to get the book translated in Malayalam.

Kalaburagi, Jun 16: Stones were pelted by villagers at an ambulance and a vehicle of health department at Tanda village here, which was fetching 15 people who had tested positive for COVID-19 to a hospital for treatment.

"A medical team along with some police personnel had gone to the Tanda village to bring 15 people who had tested positive for COVID-19 to a hospital for treatment on Monday," Lada Martin Marbaniang, Superintendent of Police (SP) Kalaburagi said.

"The medical team had an argument with villagers, which turned violent and those people started pelting stones at the ambulance and a vehicle of the health department," the SP said.

"On getting information, we rushed more security forces to the village. I visited the spot and spoke to a few leaders. Subsequently, we were able to convince them and all of them were brought to the hospital. A case has been registered against violent offenders," he added.

Hassan, July 31: A police sub-inspector (PSI) reportedly hanged himself at his official quarters in Channarayapatna town today morning.

The deceased has been identified as Kiran Kumar, 34, who was in charge of Channarayapatna rural police station.

Sources said that he was upset after two murder cases were reported in the last 24 hours in his limits. Kiran reportedly told colleagues an hour before the extreme step that he feared he would be suspended.  

According to locals, the SI was upset after news of the two murders due to alleged negligence of the police spread on social media. He killed himself before a visit by senior officials. IGP, southern range, and SP Srinivasagowda was planning to visit the town and the spots where the murders took place on Friday.

Kiran, a native of Lalanakere village in Arsikere taluk, was known for his rapport with local people. He was alone when the incident took place. His wife and children had gone to Lalanakere for the Varamahalakashmi festival on Thursday night. The body was shifted to the mortuary for a postmortem.

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 10: Eight foreign nationals from Italy and United Kingdom, who were undergoing treatment in Kerala, have recovered fully from COVID-19, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Thursday.

The state reported 12 more positive cases of coronavirus on Thursday taking the total number of confirmed cases to 357, Vijayan said as he cautioned that the strict vigil against the pandemic will continue.

While the northern districts of Kannur and Kasaragod reported four cases each, two cases were reported from Malappuram district and one each from Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram districts, Vijayan told reporters after a COVID-19 review meeting here.

Of the eight foreign nationals, seven were undergoing treatment at the Ernakulam Medical College Hospital and one in Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital, Vijayan said, adding that some of the patients were in a serious condition.

The seven foreigners from UK, admitted in Ernakulam medical college, were part of the group which had on March 15 tried to leave the country without permission while being under observation at Munnar, a hill station in the state.

The Italian tourist in Thiruvananthapuram was staying at a resort at Varkala near here and was admitted to hospital on March 13, Vijayan said.

"The recovery of this UK tourist group, which comprised of 83 and 76-year-olds is a testimony to our robust healthcare system and good treatment extended to these patients," the chief minister said.

It has been 100 days since the first COVID-19 case was reported in the state and since then, a total of 357 cases have been confirmed and currently, 258 patients are under treatment in different hospitals.
