This rule will come into effect from December 1. Passengers are required to have identity cards with photo during travel. They are required to produce them whenever officials ask for them, Railway authorities have said.
Until now, identity cards were required only for AC class passengers, E-Ticket and Tatkal services. But now the rule has been made mandatory for all class of passengers and all kinds of services.
The move has been taken in the backdrop of complaints of large scale irregularities in ticket bookings. Owing to sale of tickets in black and agent businesses, deserving passengers were facing problems. The step is likely to put a brake on the sale of tickets at double price by agents.
Any identity proof given by government authorities including Gram Panchayat, Town Council and City Corporation will suffice, Railway authorities have said.
The person who produced identity proof while obtaining the ticket in the counter, the same person is required to produce identity proof during travel.
