Mangalore, November 11: A 47-year-old marine engineer Keith D'Souza, who had been suffering from severe neck pain, successfully recovered after undergoing a surgery at Fr Muller Medical College Hospital in Mangalore few days ago.
During the surgery, Mr D'Souza was implanted with an artificial cervical disc made of titanium in his spinal cord by doctors of Fr Muller.
Briefing media persons on the surgery, spine surgeon Dr Jacob Chacko, who led the surgery, said that it was the first time that implantation of an artificial cervical device had been done in Mangalore. The patient Keith D'Souza was suffering from sharp neck pain and pain in the left arm, due to which he had been unable to lead a normal life. He has now recovered post-surgery and gotten rid of the pain, he said.
He said that in such procedures, co-operation of the patient was required. Patients with local inflammation, infection, pregnancy, morbid obesity, fever, mental illness and osteoporosis were not advised to undergo the corrective surgery, he said.
Keith D'Souza has recovered after the surgery within four days and his condition is normal and healthy.
Fr Muller Medical College Hospital administrator Fr Richard Coelho was present on the occasion.
