First batch of Hajj pilgrims from Mangalore returns

Mangalore, November 12: The first batch of Hajj pilgrims, who had undertaken pilgrimage from this coastal city this year, returned home on Monday.

Carrying 220 pilgrims, the wide-body jet airliner 'Airbus A-310' landed at the Mangalore International Airport at around 2:15 p.m.

This marks the start of the return of as many 1065 pilgrims from Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Udupi, Hassan and Chikmagalur districts, flown on Government subsidy from Mangalore.

State Hajj Committee Chief Executive Officer Maaz Ahmed Shareef, Mangalore Hajj Management Committee President Y Muhammad Kunhi, Dakshina Kananda District Wakf Advisory Committee President H S Usman among other welcomed the pilgrims.

Despite a delay of around three hours the pilgrims had no serious complaints about airliner. Relatives and friends of the pilgrims, who had gathered outside the Airport terminal to welcome their dear ones, had to wait for three hours due to the flight delay.

“Though we faced some minor troubles during the pilgrimage, the return was a happy journey. The Zam Zam water cans, which had arrived at the Airport before us were handed over to us by the authorities immediately”, said Abdullah, one of the pilgrims.

It could be recalled here that last year Hajj pilgrims from Mangalore on their way back home had got stranded at King Abdul Azeez International Airport at Jeddah for a long time. Moreover the Zam Zam water cans and other belongings of the pilgrims had reached home after weeks of delay.

Maaz Ahmed Shareef said that the remaining pilgrims would return in five consecutive days. The second batch, which is expected to arrive on Tuesday, will consist of 220 pilgrims. The third and fourth batches each consisting of 219 pilgrims will return on Wednesday and Thursday respectively, while the fifth and final batch consisting of 187 people will return on Friday, he said.

Among the 1,065 pilgrims, who had boarded Hajj flights from Mangalore this year, 547 are male and 518 are female.

Youth thrashed, arrested, hospitalised after he attacks policemen at Melkar

Mangaluru, July 10: Five people including four policemen suffered injuries following a clash at Melkar in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district last night.

Abdul Salam, 29, a resident of Goltamajalu near Kalladka, was arrested on charge of attacking policemen. He was also attacked by the cops on the spot. Currently he is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

According to sources, Abdul Salam and another person were quarrelling with lorry drivers on the highway. A couple of policemen including ASI Shailesh, who were on patrol, intervened.

This led to a clash between cops and Abdul Salam, who reportedly snatched the baton from a cop and hit the men in khaki, eye witnesses said.

However, police sources claimed that Abdul Salam was holding an iron road and he thrashed policemen with the rod.

Meanwhile, more policemen reached the spot and thrashed the accused before arresting him.

Police sources said ASI Shailesh, HC Devappa and PCs Niranjan and Malik were injured in the incident. The policemen were treated the government hospital in Bantwal.

Abdul Salam, who suffered critical injuries, was taken to a private hospital in Mangaluru after preliminary treatment.

A case was registered against him in the Bantwal Town Police Station under section 353, 504, 506, 332, 307, 427 IPC, and 2 A Karnataka Prevention of Destruction of Public Property Act.

Zomato acquires Uber Eats in India

Jan 21: Info Edge (India)'s shareholding in Zomato reduces to 22.71%; Uber receives 9.99% stake in Zomato.

Info Edge (India) announced that Zomato Media (Zomato) has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Uber's food delivery business in India (Uber) in an all-stock transaction, which gives Uber 9.99% ownership in Zomato.

Uber Eats in India will discontinue operations and direct restaurants, delivery partners, and users of the Uber Eats apps to the Zomato platform, effective 21 January 2020.

Upon closing of said acquisition, the company's shareholding in Zomato shall stand reduced to about 22. 71 % on fully converted & diluted basis.

Shivakumar urges Karnataka CM to resolve farmers' issues amid lockdown

Bengaluru, May 2: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president DK Shivakumar has urged Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa to help the farmers in sending their produce to a market here amid the coronavirus lockdown.

The Congress leader made the appeal to the Chief Minister after listening to the farmers' issues while visiting KR Puram market on Friday.

Farmers told Shivakumar that the police are stopping their vehicles going towards the market despite the order passed by the Centre permitting the movement of vehicles carrying essential commodities during the lockdown.

"I have received calls from more than 100 farmers in the past few days. Every day, farmers from Kolar, Chikballapur, Malur and many other places come to KR Puram market to sell their agricultural goods, but their vehicles are stopped by the police. The cops do not allow them to sell fruits and vegetables. I request the Chief Minister to look into the matter and help the farmers," Shivakumar told reporters.

"I got to know that more than 50 vehicles were sent back. This government is of no use if they cannot secure the interests of the farmers. This government is not providing required support to the farmers," he added.

The Congress leader was accompanied by MLC Narayana Swamy and former president of Hoskote Authority Narayana Gowda during the visit to KR Puram market.
