Mangalore remembers first PM of India on his birth anniversary

Mangalore, November 14: The city of Mangalore paid tribute to the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his 123rd birth anniversary on Wednesday.

A number of programmes were organised to mark the occasion. A host of dignitaries paid floral tributes to the statue of Pandit Nehru in front of the Corporate Office, here.

Ajai Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of the Corporation Bank spoke about the significance of the day. He congratulated the children who had come to celebrate the birth anniversary of Chacha Nehru. He said, “Pandit Nehru was a great visionary, statesman, leader and a great human being. He was the architect of foreign policy and education system in India. He believed in the future generation of education and had laid the foundation of premier education institutes.”

Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, President of Kannada Sahitya Parishad, Dakshina Kannada District, speaking on the occasion said that the importance of celebrating the birthday of Pandit Nehru should be made known to the children of the country.

In the district Congress office here, Bantwal MLA B Ramanath Rai led the floral tributes.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Rai recalled the contributions of Pandit Nehru to the country during his tenure as the first Prime Minister of India from August 1947 to May 1964.

The day is also observed as Children's Day throughout the country. Pandit Nehru, also known as the architect of modern India, had immense love for children who used to call him Chacha Nehru.

A pivotal figure in the Indian independence movement, Nehru was born on November 14, 1889 in Allahabad.

He was also a key figure in international politics in the post-war period, and was one of the founding figures of the non-aligned movement.

Nehru graduated from Cambridge University, and returned to India in 1912. Popularly referred to as Panditji, Nehru was also a writer, scholar and amateur historian. The son of the wealthy Indian barrister and politician Motilal Nehru, Nehru had become one of the youngest leaders of the Indian National Congress.

Udupi, Apr 25: Senior RSS leader H Somashekhar Bhatt received a call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday enquiring about his health.

Bhatt got emotional hearing the Prime Minister's voice at the other end, family sources said.

The Prime Minister called at 8.30 AM and began the conversation with 'Somashekharji' and spoke for about six minutes.

The 85-year-old veteran recalled how the Jana Sangh came to power in Udupi municipality under the leadership of V S Acharya in 1968 and about his association with the Sangh Parivar through the decades and his imprisonment during the Emergency.

Bhatt, former Udupi municipality president, later said it was a rare honour for him.

"I am very glad that PM Modi called and spoke to me. I shared the experience of meeting him at the Jaipur session.

Asked to take care of health and expressed concern," he said.

The Prime Minister has been calling senior functionaries of the party who worked for the Sangh Parivar in the time of adversities to build up the BJP in its present form and seeking advice from them.

He had also called in recent days former MLA Ram Bhat who was elected from Puttur in Dakshina Kannada and D H Shankar Murthy, who was former chairman of the state legislative council, BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel tweeted.

Mangaluru, Apr 4: No positive case of coronavirus has been detected in Dakshina Kannada district as per the latest update released by the district administration on Friday.

Test results of throat swab samples of 16 people with suspected symptoms were received today and all of them were negative.

A total of 38,518 people have been screened for coronavirus in Dakshina Kannada district till date with 72 people being screened today.

Bengaluru, Jun 3: The Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences at Hubballi has successfully treated a COVID-19 patient through plasma therapy, state medical education minister K Sudhakar said today.

"Karnataka achieves yet another milestone in battle against #COVID19. KIMS Hubli has successfully treated a Covid19 patient through Plasma Therapy & is the first institute in the state to accomplish this. Congrats to KIMS doctors & staff for this feat!" Mr Sudhakar tweeted.

In plasma therapy treatment, plasma cells from a COVID-19 patient, who has recovered from the disease, is transfused to a coronavirus patient who is in critical condition to treat him.

Plasma therapy was effectively used in the past during Ebola and the Spanish flu pandemic.
