Moodbidri, November 16: It is one of the main responsibilities of a language to mirror or reflect both present and permanent, opined senior litterateur and Jnanapeeth awardee Prof U R Ananthamurthy.
Speaking after inaugurating the ninth edition of 'Alva's Nudisiri' programme at Moodbidri on Friday, he said language must not be exposed to choosing between present and permanent in terms of relevance.
The Kannada of Pampa, Kumaravyasa, Allamaprabhu and Basaveshwara, although of 12th century, is still comprehendible. But today's Kannada will not be understood by people after 10 years. Such is the impact of English on our lives. People are hesitating to accept Kannada even in primary schools. English must be learnt as a necessity but one should not do away with one's mother tongue, he opined.
Stating that literature is deeply rooted with agriculture, Mr. Ananthamurthy said that today agriculture is taking a beating at the hands of 'development' and termed such development activities as a 'curse'.
Literary great DR Bendre wanted various streets of Kannada to join to form a lingual highway. A rich form of Kannada which was taken to the common man through the efforts of Dr. Rajkumar and Prof. KS Nisar Ahmed, Mr. Ananthamurthy pointed out.
