Moodbidri, November 18: Closing down Kannada medium government schools is a sin, opined Prof K S Nisar Ahmed.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the ninth edition of 'Alva's Nudisiri-2012' at Vidyagiri in Moodbidri, he said it is the duty of the state government to open more Kannada medium schools.
The decision of the state government to close down over 12,000 Kannada medium schools in Karnataka is a foolish one. Spending huge sums of money on unnecessary matters instead of utilising it for the improvement of these schools is a sad thing, he said.
If the government schools are to be saved, then their condition has to be improved. An equivalent atmosphere between Kannada and English medium schools must be ensured, to guarantee that the Kannada medium students do not acquire an inferiority complex. Even if basic facilities are provided to schools in a couple of districts each year, the condition of these schools can be improved in just a few years, he said.
“Kannadigas internally have a feeling of disrespect towards their language, which is pitiful. We must forego puritanism with regard to language. English has grown by borrowing various words from other languages in the world. It is not right to diminish the existence of an ancient language like Kannada merely for subsistence. Making it compulsory to learn Kannada for obtaining employment should be insisted” said Prof Ahmed.
