Kasargod, November 18: Cutting across party lines, MPs from Kerala will raise in Parliament their strong protest against the "neglect" of the state by Air India, especially its failure to serve properly the NRI travellers.

This was decided at a meeting of state MPs held here to discuss the issues of common interests to be raised in the coming winter session of Parliament.

Briefing reporters on the deliberations, state information minister KC Joseph said chief minister Oommen Chandy had urged the MPs to bring this issue to the attention of Parliament.

The MPs also expressed concern over the failure of public sector banks in providing education loans. Some of the MPs alleged that the banks had been ignoring the guidelines of the Centre and the RBI in this regard.

They said banks should display the guidelines before their branches and prepare a pamphlet highlighting these norms, to be distributed to candidates approaching them for loans.

On the Kochi metro rail project, Chandy told the meeting that the state was keen to have the work implemented by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

This issue would be taken up by Chandy with Union urban development minister Kamal Nath and Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit later this month, Joseph said.

The chief minister told the conference that procedure for conferring the 'classical' status to Malayalam was in the final stage. The Centre had agreed to hear the state's arguments on this issue and take a decision soon.

The meet also voiced concern over Indian Oil Corporation's reluctance to provide due compensation to those killed and injured in LPG leak tragedy at Chalai near Kannur a couple of months ago.

The oil company had so far provided only Rs one crore and not bothered to do anything after that, the MPs alleged.

If the company continued to ignore the matter, the state would explore legal options, the Chief Minister assured the meet.
