Belthangady, November 18: As a recent and much sought-after development in the Soujanya rape and murder investigation, the case was referred by the state government to Corps of Investigation Department (CID) police on Saturday.
Home Minister R Ashok said that the CID had been handed over the investigation of the murder which took place in Dharmasthala last month and were asked to book the culprits.
Though state police had arrested the alleged rapist Santhosh Rao, a few Hindutva outfits had demanded a high level probe into the case.
“The case was referred to CID police, who will also investigate the involvement of individuals or groups allegedly spreading false rumours about Dharmasthala temple authorities in relation to the case,” Mr Ashok said.
The development comes following appeals by the bereaved family members of Soujanya and Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade.
