Mangalore, November 19: The 'Pretorium' of St Aloysius P U College was visibly enlivened with the enthusiasm of participants from as many as 25 P.U. colleges participating in Pre-Unique 2012, a state-level inter-collegiate fest hosted annually by the College.

The two-day intellectual and cultural fest with various competitions like ice-breaker, live photography, mime, quiz, dumb charades, salad dressing, collage, poetry, music mania, stress interview and cultural dance, was inaugurated in the premises of the college on Monday.

In her inaugural address, Dr Malini Hebbar said that no person could outshine one in being themselves. “Uniqueness lies in being yourself and being the best of yourself. For accomplishing the best in you, you need a lot of perseverance and sustained sincerity. You need the same sincerity to excel in your endeavours,” she said.

“If you don't make mistakes and you do not learn; if you don't make use of your opportunities, you may regret. Work with complete optimism and be prepared to lose with grace. Your joy will lie in the fact that you have participated,” she advised and encouraged the students.

Delivering the presidential address, principal of the college Fr Elvis C Lewis said that each individual was at the centre of the cosmos. “Realising this is a discovery to be made by yourself. To know and realise that you are unique, is an immense joy. But when we fail to realise this, we start looking at different means of attaining joy, such as gadgets and drugs,” he said.

Among those present were staff convener of Pre-Unique Kiran Shetty welcomed the gathering, while Uzwal Menezes proposed a vote of thanks. Vice Principal of the college Rekha k Alva, Joint convenors Tulasi Kumar, Ashwini V and Sujith Kumar, President of students' council Nicole Monteiro, secretary Jason Saldanha and joint secretary Joanna Vas.

The short inaugural ceremony was followed by lively competitions that lasted throughout the day. The closing ceremony of Pre-Unique-2012 will be held on Tuesday at 3.30 p.m. at the same venue, where the winners of competitions will be awarded and the championship winners of the fest will be announced.
