Australian coach gives tips to St Aloysius students

Mangalore, November 21: It's an attempt to combine Indian passion for cricket with the discipline and rigours of the Australian system of coaching.

On a Tuesday evening at the St. Aloysius College ground, Martin Gleeson, Chief Executive Office of the Sports Education Development India Ltd., was organising rows of enthusiastic children, each ready to grab a cricket ball and run through their delivery stride. Although the deliveries start off wide, or even sometimes reaches the batsmen at two bounces, his bits of advice – “straighten your arm” or “use the front arm” — sees the ball getting closer to the stumps.

“Indian children are very coachable. They listen and learn, are adaptable, capable of picking skills and are very enthusiastic. They are hardworking too. While Australian children do around two sessions (of practice) a week, Indian children do up to five,” he says.

As a level-three coach, Mr. Gleeson's coaching endeavours have seen him in places as varied as Pakistan, Japan, Bangladesh, and Papua New Guinea. Armed with a booklet of the Cricket Australia curriculum and the accrued wisdom of years of experience, his company Cricket India Academy aims to train coaches of Mangala Sports in the city in the Australian system and methodology.

It is the little things that the 'Australian style' of coaching would bring in. Marks for delivery stride, and clever organisation of the bowlers that sees them waiting for lesser time between deliveries by practising are some of the innovations seen on ground.

Cricket India Academy operates in 11 centres across the country – from metros to tier-III cities such as Madikeri, Dharmapuri – and hopes to cover over 4,000 children by early next year. “We hope to produce quality coaches, and from them produce great cricketers,” he says.

Muslim Committee drops Jan 4 anti-CAA protest plan as cops refuse permission

Mangaluru, Jan 2: The Muslim Central Committee of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi has dropped its plan to stage a massive protest against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens on January 4 at Mangaluru’s Nehru Maidan.

Addressing a press conference here today, committee chief K S Mohammed Masood made this announcement.

“All the 28 organisations that had decided to stage protest under the leadership of the Muslim Central Committee, have unanimously agreed to temporarily cancel the protest plan after the city police refused permission for the event,” he said.

Mr Masood requested the people, especially the youth, not to lose patience. “No one should head to Nehru Maidan on January 4 as Muslim leaders have unanimously decided to cancel the protest,” he urged.

S M Rasheed Haji, Y Abdulla Kunhi, Umar UH, Ibrahim Kodichal, B M Mumtaz Ali, Khasim H K, Mansoor Ahmed Azad and Asif Deals were present in the press meet.

Are u planning to approach the court for gaining the permission from the police, bcoz otherwise I don't think we will get the permission

Secondly, a few days back I wanted to contact Muslim central committee office to confirm if the protest Wil be there. I googled for the no, but the no. did not exist. Does that mean the Muslim central committee does not have an office or telephone no????

This only shows how organised we are.

Requesting Muslim central committee to get their house in order. Get more professional. Also consult people to utilise various platform to responsibly collect funds from so many ordinary bearys who want to donate money, but don't know whom to send it to.

We need an action committee to handle such situations. It must consist a battery of lawyers to fight the cases filed by the police.

If our leaders are old, they need to groom new leaders into the committee.

Moreover, it is important to question these so called leaders about their fecilitation program conducted for making kateel wen he won the election. Wat was the purpose of such fecilitation. Becoz I don't think he gives a damn when our community suffered. I question, whether all this is done in our name only to gain your contact and flourish ur business???

Karnataka crosses 1.5 Lakh mark in COVID-19 cases 30,000

Chennai, Aug 5: Karnataka on Wednesday crossed the 1.5 lakh mark in respect of COVID-19 cases and Kerala was on the verge of 30,000 while Andhra Pradesh witnessed a five- digit daily caseload after a lull.

Tamil Nadu saw a small jump in its daily cases as compared to Tuesday while Telangana and union territory Puducherry reported their respective record single-day spikes.

The five states and the union territory reported a combined 24,415 fresh confirmed coronavirus cases and 316 fatalities on Wednesday.

A Puducherry Minister tested positive for the deadly virus while an opposition AINRC legislator who contracted the coronavirus earlier was discharged after being cured of it.

In Karnataka, the coronavirus cases stood at 1,51,449 with the addition of 5,619 fresh cases while 100 deaths were reported, pushing the total fatalities to 2,804, the health department said.

According to a health bulletin, 74,679 persons have been discharged so far, leaving 73,958 active cases. Andhra Pradesh''s COVID-19 surge continued on Wednesday too, with 10,128 cases reported afresh after easing a little in the last four days.

The overall tally rose to 1,86,461 on Wednesday. The state had last reported its five-figure daily tally on July 31 when it was 10,376.

The state also saw a record number of 77 coronavirus deaths in a day, pushing the toll to 1,681, the latest bulletin said.

In the last 24 hours, 8,729 patients had also recovered from the infection and there were 80,426 active cases.

As many as 1,04,354 patients have been cured and discharged so far. Kerala was on the verge of 30,000 cases, as its tally stood at 29,145 with the addition of 1,195 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday.

The toll from the virus so far climbed to 94 with seven more deaths. Thiruvananthapuram continued to top the districts in infections with 274 cases on Wednesday, of whom 248 had been infected through contact.

Malappuram (167), Kasaragod (128), Ernakulam (120) and Alappuzha (108) reported over 100 cases. As many as 112 patients died of COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu, the highest reported in a single day so far, taking the toll to 4,461 on Wednesday while 5,175 more people tested positive, propelling the case count to 2.73 lakh.

Recoveries outnumbered fresh cases with 6,031 people getting discharged from various hospitals, taking the total cured to 2,14,815 as the active cases dropped to 54,184, a government bulletin said.

In Telangana, 2,012 new cases emerged while 13 related fatalities were reported, taking the total infection tally in the state to 70,958. Out of the new cases, 532 were from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), followed by Medchal-Malkajgiri 198 and Rangareddy 188, a state government bulletin said on Wednesday, providing data as of 8 PM on August 4.

The total number of people who recovered from the infectious disease touched 50,814, while 19,568 were under treatment.

The COVID-19 fatality rate in the state was 0.81 per cent, while it was 2.10 per cent at the national level, it said. The recovery rate was 71.6 per cent in the state, while it was 66.31 per cent in the country, it added.

Puducherry clocked its worst single-day spike of 286 infections, recording seven deaths, even as the overall tally of cases went up to 4,432.

The deaths during the 24 hours in the Union Territory took the toll to 65 so far since the outbreak of the virus, Health Minister Malladi Krishna Rao told a virtual press conference.

His cabinet colleague M Kandasamy and his son reported positive for the virus and were admitted to JIPMER.

Rs 400 cr budget to construct twin tower building to facilitate all govt dept in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Mar 5: Karnataka government on Thursday set aside Rs 400 crore to construct twin towers building with 25 floors here at Anand Rao Circle to facilitate all government departments to function at one place.

"To facilitate all the Government Departments to function in one building, a "Twin-Towers" building with 25 storeys will be constructed at Arland Rao Circle, Bengaluru, with an expenditure of Rs 400 crore," said Karnataka Chief Minister Yediyurappa while presenting the budget in the state Assembly.

He further said that the road cross-over facility for pedestrians other than metro commuters will be provided through 24 metro stations.

"The construction of 56 km long Outer Ring Road - Airport Metro from Central Silk Board junction to Bengaluru International Airport via K R Puram and Hebbala at an estimated cost of Rs 14,500 crore will be commenced during the year 2020-21," he said.

Rs 1,000 crore budget each have been announced for the restoration of Bengaluru roads for two years, 276 Karnataka public school for their infrastructure development.
