Mangalore, November 23: It is a myth that FDI in retail will ensure higher income to farmers and help reduce poverty in India, said Old Bunder Wholesale Kirana and Allied Merchants Association President G G Mohandas Prabhu.

Speaking at a protest meet, "Say No to FDI" organised by the Association at KCCI in Mangalore on Thursday, he pointed out that the association is distressed by the decision of Government of India to allow 51 per cent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Multibrand Retail Trade. The Indian Government should reconsider this decision in the interest of Indian Consumers, Indian Farmers and the Indian Traders who make a living by the retail trade, he said.

A report from a Global Trade Union has warned that FDI in Multibrand Retail would lead to large scale displacement of Indian Workers in retail, logistics, agriculture and manufacturing sectors. The National Sample Survey Organisation of India (NSSO) has determined that 44 Million people are directly involved in retail trade.

"The association is very apprehensive about the capacity of the small retail traders to withstand the onslaught of MNCs. The government of India is keen on inflow of capital into backed infrastructure by these MNCs," he said.

Another study shows that for every dollar paid by the US consumers for food products, the share of farmers has come down from 41 cents in the 1950s to 18.5 Cents in 2006.

The Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) has estimated a 36 per cent loss of fruits and vegetables in USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand where big retail is most developed, he said.

FDI is the result of liberalisation policies. The country has not received major capital investment despite liberalisation policy was introduced in 1991-92.

The total capital investment the country received in 2011-12 is 47 billion dollars.

However, the money sent by Indians residing abroad to the country is 66 billion dollars, he informed.

Hale Bunder Shramikara Sangha Secretary Vasanth Achary said that Government claiming to give jobs with the introduction of FDI is meaningless.

More than 20 crore people are involved in retail trade. Establishment of one Walmart will affect 1,200 retail shops. Only 240 people may be employed in these companies. However, 4000 people will lose their jobs, he said.

The allies of UPA government have themselves criticised the decision of the government. The Congress government which rules Kerala state have themselves protested against the Central decision.

"Mexico's retail trade has been completely destroyed after FDI in Multibrand retail trade. India should not do such mistake and should protest against this in time," he stressed.

The Association took out a protest march and stopped their business till 12 noon. A memorandum was sent to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asking him to reconsider the decision.

Bengaluru, Jan 10: Chief minister BS Yediyurappa said on Thursday he might not attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Davos, Switzerland, and would most likely visit Delhi this weekend for discussions on the pending cabinet expansion.

He was expected to join Union ministers Piyush Goyal and Mansukh Mandaviya, chief ministers Amarinder Singh (Punjab) and Kamal Nath (Madhya Pradesh) and over 100 Indian CEOs at WEF’s 50th annual gathering on January 21-24.

“Mostly, I may not go for Davos (meet),” he told reporters on Thursday. Last week, he had said he was not keen on travelling to the Swiss town but was considering it as some chief ministers’ attendance was required at the high-profile event.

Eleven Congress-JD(S) turncoats, who contested the bypolls on BJP tickets and won, reportedly pressured Yediyurappa to take a decision on cabinet expansion before the now-uncertain Davos trip; it was even suggested that he should simply cancel the trip. The newly elected BJP MLAs are widely expected to be inducted as ministers. But officials in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said his disinclination to travel had nothing to do with the cabinet exercise.

“It’s mainly because of his health. That place (Davos) has got temperature of minus 4-6 degrees and it will be quite tedious for Yediyurappa at the age of 76,” one official said. BJP functionaries, however, claimed that he was wary of taking a trip amid tensions in the party. “The new MLAs have been breathing down Yediyurappa’s neck. They have pushed him into a corner, demanding that he complete cabinet expansion before going anywhere,” a senior functionary said.

On Thursday, the chief minister said he had sought a meeting with party bosses in Delhi. “To discuss cabinet expansion and other important issues, I plan to travel to New Delhi on January 11 or 12. However, I am still waiting for an appointment with the BJP national president and prime minister,” he said.

While Yediyurappa, his additional chief secretary P Ravi Kumar and political adviser MB Maramkal may not visit Davos, a 10-member delegation from Karnataka, including Jagadish Shettar, is expected to travel. There are reports ministers’ family members might join the delegation.

Udupi, Feb 16: Nine people were killed after a private bus collided with a large roadside boulder in Udupi district in Karnataka on Saturday, the police said. The accident took place on Saturday evening, at around 5.45 pm, on the Mulnur Ghat at Abbas Kattingeri in Mala village, while the bus was on its way to Mangaluru from Sringeri, reported the news channel.

The bus, which was reportedly carrying around 35 passengers, was trying to manoeuvre a turn while travelling on a ghat road when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle hit a massive boulder and the impact caused seven people to die on the spot. Two others passed away while they were on the way to the hospital.

The deceased passengers have been identified as Radha Ravi, Yogendra, Preetham Gowda, Basavaraju, Angana, Sharul and Ranjitha. The cleaner of the bus was also killed in the accident.

According to reports, the passengers in the bus were mostly in their early 20s and were employees of Vital Records Private Limited near JCK Industrial Park. Century Vital Records is a data security company which works in the Hebbal Industrial Mysuru. The group was visiting Udupi, Hornadu and Kudremukh.

While some of the injured persons were rushed to Manipal hospital, others were taken to the Karkala city government hospital, police said.

The police have said that rash and negligent driving by the driver is likely to have caused the accident. A case has been registered at the Karkala Rural Police Station, the police said.

Last month, three persons were killed and four others were injured after a fatal collision between a van and a bus near Bengaluru. Both the vehicles caught fire after the impact, but while passengers of the bus, travelling from Bengaluru to Shivamogga, managed to escape, the three passengers who were trapped in the van could not escape and were charred to death.

Mangaluru, May 30: Accusing the chief minister B S Yediyurappa led Karnataka government of ignoring frontline warriors against covid-19, Mangaluru MLA U T Khader has demanded immediate release of pending salaries of doctors, lab technicians and nurses hired under the National Health Mission.

Addressing a press conference in the city today, the former minister said that Congress would launch an agitation if the government fails to release the amount immediately.

The non-payment of salaries clearly shows that the government has no concern for the COVID-19 warriors who are serving on a contract basis for two months, he said.

Mr Khader said there are 23,000 personnel hired under the National Health Mission in Karnataka including 600 in Dakshina Kannada district alone.  All of them are waiting for their salaries for the last two months.

“Asha workers were also partially paid for the month of April. If the government had concern towards COVID-19 warriors, they would have paid extra for the doctors, nurses, and other workers who are working tirelessly in the fight against COVID-19 at the grassroots level,” he added.
