Mangalore, November 23: Departments of Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ) and Master of Social Work of Mangalore University on Friday organised a 'blood donation camp' in association with the Lions, Lioness and Leo Club of Mangalagangothri and India Red Cross Society of India on the University campus, near here.
Addressing the gathering, chief guest Dr Shantharam Shetty M, Pro-Chancellor, Nitte University said, that blood donation is the greatest of all as it saves the life of the people. “As a surgeon I have faced many problems due to the shortage of blood supply in case of emergency”, he recalled.
Encouraging the young generation to donate blood, he said, “It is the right time to give blood” and lauded the University for giving that opportunity to the students.
Citing the statistics of the need of blood in India, M B Sadashiv of Lions' Club said, “There is need of 10 million units of blood whereas we have only five million units of them”.
In his presidential address, Prof TC Shivshankara Murthy, Vice Chancellor, Mangalore University said, “As many as 65 per cent of India's population is below 35 years old. Students should make use of this opportunity”, he said. He also promised to carry this venture forward.
Dr G P Shivram of MCJ Dept welcomed and Dr Mohan S Singe of MSW Dept thanked the gathering. Dr Waheeda Sultana, chairperson of MCJ Dept, P Bhagavandas kajava, Vinatha Kajava, PS Prabhakar, Dr Kishore Kumar CK, students and faculty of various departments of Mangalore University were present at the occasion.
Followed by the stage programme, students, members of various organisations, faculty donated blood at the Health Centre, Mangalore University.
On the same occasion, Mangalore University 'Blood Donor's Group' was formed intending to give blood in emergency cases.
