Legal literacy chariot launched in Mangalore

Mangalore, November 23: In a bid to create legal awareness among the people, particularly those from rural areas, the District Legal Service Authority has launched `Kanoonu Saksharata Ratha' (legal literacy chariot) and mobile Janata court.

 

The chariot was flagged off by Chief Executive Officer of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Dr K N Vijayaprakash on Friday at the premises of District court here.

 

The chariot which would tour the district for three days intended to create awareness among rural people about laws and court proceedings.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Mangalore Bar Association President P Ashok Ariga said Dakshina Kannada district has bagged fourth place in Mega Loka Adalath. In the previous year, Lok Adalat has succeeded in settling 1,500 cases through conciliation in just three-days of period in the district, he said. This year, from April 1 to November 20, as many as 7592 cases were settled, he said.

 

He said that the legal chariot, besides creating awareness among the people, would also settle disputes over public utility services pertaining to revenue, police, social and family welfare, labour etc. Senior officers of various departments would be present during the programme and help settle the disputes out of court.

 

Out-going Deputy Commissioner Dr N S Channappa Gowda, Ashok G Nijagannavar, Principal district and sessions judge and chairman, district legal services authority, Assistant Commissioner for Labour D G Nagesh, Deputy Director of Women and Children Welfare Department Shakunthala, Children Welfare Committee Chairperson Asha Nayak and others were present.

Bengaluru, Aug 4: Janata Dal (Secular) leader and MLA Satyanarayana passed away today due to multiple organ failure. He was 67.

Satyanarayana was representing Tumakuru’s Sira constituency in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He is survived by five daughters and one son.

It is learnt that he was suffering from multiple organ ailments from the past few days and was recently admitted to Manipal Hospital in the city. He breathed his last at 12:20 p.m.

He contested from JDS and worked three times as MLA and 2 times as MP. He was the chairman of KSRTC during the coalition government led by HD Kumaraswamy.

Former Prime Minister HD Devegowda mourned his death and said, “It is a shock to hear the demise of former minister and my close friend. We are friends from the past 3 decades and I cannot recall the days without him.”

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President DK Shivakumar said, “Satyanarayana was concerned for the farmers and he was a gentleman. Hearing the news hurts me and this is an irreparable loss to the political field.”

Bengaluru, May 11: Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar today held a video conference with Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja to discuss measures to tackle COVID-19.

The ministers discussed in detail the protocols for testing, quarantine and treatment for COVID-19 that are being followed by both the states.

The Karnataka Health Department on Monday said that 10 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the state, taking the total number of positive cases to 858.

"31 people have lost their lives due to coronavirus in the state and 422 persons have been discharged after recovery," the Health Department added.

Kerala, on the other hand, has tackled the coronavirus crisis better than most other states of the country. There are only 19 active cases of COVID-19 in the state while 489 people have recovered. The death toll in the state is 4, according to the data published by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday.

Mangaluru/Mysuru, May 19: Though the Karnataka government permitted the private buses, operators in Dakshina Kannada district have decided not to operate buses until May end. In Mysuru district too the private buses remained off the roads.

Dakshina Kannada Bus Owners’ Association President Dilraj Alva said “Technically, private bus operators are not able to operate services as all of us have surrendered our permits. If we start services we will have to pay the tax for entire month. Hence, we have decided to resume bus services from June 1.”

The private buses had suspended their services since March 24.

In addition, bus owners also have two more demands which the state government needs to consider on priority, he said.

“We have requested the government to exempt private buses from paying tax for the next six months. We were not plying buses during lockdown and it will be tough for us in the next three months to operate as per new conditions.”

“The government has allowed only 30 persons in each bus to maintain social distancing. In addition, we have been urging the state government for bus fare revision since 2013. The government has revised the bus fares of KSRTC twice after that,” Alva said adding that bus owners will be meeting Mangaluru RTO on Tuesday.
