Five achievers honoured with Rachana Awards

Mangalore, November 25: Today, India lacks good leadership, national vision, national strategy and national character, said Maj. Gen. (Rtd.) Ian Cardozo, Chairman of Rehabilitation, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.

Speaking at Rachana Awards 2012, an award presentation ceremony hosted by Rachana, a forum of Catholic businessmen, professionals and entrepreneurs, at Milagres Jubilee Hall here on Sunday, he said that for him, the country always came first, and so did its people.

“But I am disturbed, disappointed and disillusioned by commerce industries in India which pollute the environment. Thousands of children are born each day who are mentally-challenged, suffering from cerebral palsy and other mental and physical disabilities, because of consumption of ground water contaminated with pesticides and insecticides. They cannot be stopped because they are powerful organisations. I'm sure Rachana will take a stand against these people,” he said.

Lauding the organisation for its efforts and encouraging individuals to break boundaries and reach the extent in serving the society, he said that Rachana had the ability to make a difference and constitute change.

Five outstanding achievers were bestowed with Rachana Awards on the occasion, for their service and contribution to the society. Prof. Hilda Rayappan, Founder of Prajna Counselling centre, Mangalore, was awarded 'Rachana Outstanding Woman of the year', Florine Pinto from Perne, Bantwal Taluk, was awarded 'Rachana Agriculturist of the year', Dr Oscar G Concessao, an architect from Chennai, was awarded 'Rachana Professional of the year', Walter D'Souza, Chairman of Federation of Indian Export Organisation, Ministry of Commerce, Govt. of India, was awarded 'Rachana Entrepreneur of the year' and Mark Denis D'Souza, entrepreneur from U.A.E., was awarded 'Rachana NRI Entrepreneur of the year'. The awardees were presented with a trophy, along with a citation.

In his presidential address, Dr. Aloysius Paul D'Souza, Bishop of Mangalore, congratulated the awardees and applauded their efforts in improving and empowering the society.

President of Rachana Roy Castelino welcomed the gathering. Stany Alvares, president of Mandd Sobhann, compered the programme.

Mrs Precilla Cardozo, Marcel Monteiro, convenor of Rachana Awards, John Monteiro, secretary of Rachana and Ivan D'Souza, Congress leader, were present on the occasion.

Bengaluru, Feb 17: Karnataka State Government have plans to establish three more ultra Mega Renewable Energy power parks, each of 2500 MW capacity, Karnataka Governor, Vajubhai Wala informed the joint legislative meeting, here on Monday.

Addressing a Joint Legislative meeting here, he said that the proposed Ultra Mega Renewable Energy parks would come up at Koppala, Bidar and Gadaga in the state.

Bengaluru, Jan 3: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday clarified that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured him to consider all the demands made by his government.

"Prime Minister spoke to me personally and assured me of all help and suggested that I visit New Delhi and meet the concerned Ministers and apprise them about the state's problems and pending projects. He also directed me to prepare a detail report on this matter," Yediyurappa said in a statement.

He claimed that a section of media has misinterpreted his speech which was plain and honest towards the development of the state.

"A section of media has attached motive to my speech which was plain and honest in its content. Being in federal set up, there is nothing wrong with placing the facts before the Prime Minister and making submissions," the Chief Minister said.

"As a Chief Minister, I placed our state's problems and need for more funds for developmental activities. I pleaded before the Prime Minister for more funds to the relief work, the scientific and remunerative price for the farm produces, and special fund of Rs 50,000 crore for speeding up of on-going irrigation work. As it was farmers' meet, I felt it worthy and timely to plead the Prime Minister for more funds for all the developmental activities in the state," he said.

Asserting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a great visionary and his concern for the poor and farmers is unquestionable, he said: "When the whole world is appreciating his statesmanship and visionary zeal, it is in very bad taste for the media to attribute motives to my speech and relate it to the Prime Minister."

Yediyurappa requested media to show support to his government in the interest of the development of the state.

"I humbly request the electronic and print media not to misinterpret but support the government in the interest of the development of the state and interests of the people. I hope the media will respond to my request," he said.

Bengaluru, Jul 28: In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Monday advised people not to visit temples, mosques and other places of worship during the coming festival season.

"COVID-19 is now spreading rapidly in Karnataka, especially in Bengaluru. The festival season is starting with Varamahalakshmi festival on July 31, followed by Bakrid, Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtami, Gowri Ganesha, Moharram and then Onam. This festival season is the riskiest time for the spread of the coronavirus. Therefore, please STRICTLY follow the rules in order to stay safe. Do not visit religious places even if they are officially declared open," a notification from BBMP said.

In the context of Bakrid, unauthorised animal sacrifice (slaughtering) was prohibited in BBMP limits on roads and sidewalks, religious places, school and college premises, playgrounds and other public areas, as per the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act of 1976.

"Unauthorised animal sacrifice (slaughtering) is a punishable offence under Section 3 of the Karnataka Prevention of Animal Sacrifices Act 1959 and Rules and the Amendment Act 1975, which provides for a maximum penalty of six months or Rs 1000, or both. According to the Karnataka Prevention of Animal Sacrifices Act 1959, slaughter-worthy animals can only be slaughtered in official slaughterhouses," the notification said.
