MSMEs need to change with time: Corp Bank CMD

Mangalore, November 29: Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) need to change with time and keep pace with technology to develop further, said Ajai Kumar, CMD, Corporation Bank.

He was speaking at the regional conclave 'MSMEs: Building Capacities for Sustainable Growth' jointly organized by ASSOCHAM, India, and Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Mangalore, in the city on Thursday.

The MSME sector has always contributed to the growth of Indian economy and is likely to contribute in the increase of the country's GDP by at least 5% more in the coming days, Mr. Kumar said. He, however pointed out that MSMEs need to keep pace with technology and change with time. “There is a need in the sector to create smart entrepreneurs and reinvent market needs and elements”, he said.

Mr. Kumar also opined that more and more strategic tie-ups are made in MSMEs with associations that promote MSMEs.

Mohammed Ameen, President, KCCI, Mangalore, said that there is great scope for development of rural areas through MSMEs. However, the MSME sector is facing a number of problems including availability of land and high rates charged by KIADB, he said.

J Crasta, Co-Chairman, ASSOCHAM Southern Regional Council, expressing his views said that although 40% of the total production in the country comes from MSMEs, the government has largely neglected the sector and has been only giving lip sympathy.

Mangaluru, May 19: Officials at the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) said that Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada along with Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru have been alerted about possible heavy rains.

Dr GS Srinivasa Reddy, Director, KSNDMC, said, “Coastal districts have already been witnessing heavy downpour since Monday morning. This will continue for another two days depending on the cyclonic movement along the east coast.”

Until last evening, Haleyangadi and Surathkal in Dakshina Kannada district had received 83 mm and 82.5 mm of rainfall, respectively. Several other areas in Udupi also witnessed heavy rainfall of about 60 to 70 mm rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the rain, which intensified on Monday, to a cyclonic circulation over parts of the Arabian Sea (Comorin area) off the coast of Kerala.

The weather department said the sudden convergence of wind over the peninsular region was due to Super Cyclone Amphan, which is set to barrel into the east coast. The IMD issued an Yellow Alert for coastal Karnataka and Malnad, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall in the next few days.

Bengaluru, May 6: The second day of liquor sales in Karnataka on Tuesday after easing of lockdown curbs saw a nearly five-fold jump in earnings, with Rs 197 crore worth spirits being sold.

According to top Excise Department officials, 4.21 lakh cases of Indian-made liquor, comprising 36.37 lakh litres, worth Rs 182 crore and 7.02 lakh litres of beer in 0.90 lakh cases worth Rs 15 crore was sold on Tuesday.

On Monday, when sales resumed in the state, Rs 45 crore worth liquor was sold.

"We had never expected such a record sale. It's unprecedented," an Excise official who did not wish to be named said.

Liquor sales had resumed in Karnataka on Monday after a 41 day gap following the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kasaragod, Mar 29: The ban imposed by Karnataka in crossing state borders to Mangalore even for medical emergencies had cost a life here late on Friday.

According to sources, the ambulance carrying a 70-year-old woman for critical care treatment to Mangalore was blocked at Thalapadi border on Kasaragod-Mangalore National Highway on Friday evening.

A pregnant lady had to deliver in an ambulance recently as the police denied permission to cross over to Mangalore.
