Mangalore, November 29: It was a mixture of colours, prints and fabrics at the 'Weaves' exhibition organised by Revathi Creative Communications Ltd, at Moti Mantap here in Hotel Moti Mahal for a period of five days starting from Thursday.

Featuring fabrics and handlooms designs from 14 states including Karnataka, the exhibition promises to showcase traditional and ethnic attire from various parts of the country.

Several stalls displaying silks and cottons in rich colours from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, Assam, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal and others, were a feast for the eyes. Each stall had its own special handloom woven fabrics and prints; such as Kota silk from Kota in Rajasthan, Benaras silk from Uttar Pradesh, hand-embroidered cottons from Kolkata, woollen shawls and coats from Kashmir, block prints from West Bengal, Bandhej from Gujarat and Kalamkari from Andhra Pradesh.

Director-Co-ordinator of Weaves, Madhuri Naidu said that the main social objective of the handloom exhibition was to promote weavers and encourage and provide a market to the handloom industry.

“The original handloom industry is slowing fading away, thanks to power looms and industrialisation. Weaves has conducted over 150 exhibitions from its inception in 2006 in 25 cities across India. Through these exhibitions, we have been able to create good market for the weavers and their handloom woven ware, even in places where exhibitions are not feasible. The speciality of fabrics and prints from each state is different from the other. Such is the variety of the fabrics and designs in the exhibition,” she said.

Along with sarees and dresses, there were bed covers, table covers and sofa covers on sale at the exhibition.

Bengaluru, May 5: The Karnataka excise department booked a case against a wine shop owner in this tech city for allegedly selling more liquor than permitted under the law to a buyer on the first day of shops reopening for business after 40-day lockdown on Monday, an official said on Tuesday.

"We have booked a case against licensed shop owner S. Venkatesh for reportedly selling Indian made liquor (IML) and beer to a buyer on Monday more than he is permitted under the Karnataka Excise Act section 36," Bengaluru South Excise Deputy Commissioner A. Giri told media persons.

The alleged sale came to light when the unidentified customer posted in the social media a receipt showing he bought liquor worth Rs 52,841 from Vanilla Spirit Zone in the city''s south-eastern suburb on Monday afternoon.

"Preliminary investigation revealed that 17.4 litres of IML was sold against the permissible limit of 2.3 litres and 35.1 litres of beer against the legal limit of 18.2 litres," Giri said.

Venkatesh, however, told Giri that the buyer paid for the liquor bought by him and seven of his colleagues at the same time from the shop as they entered together.

"We are investigating to ascertain if Venkatesh violated the license conditions by paying for liquor bought by his friends with him at the same time," Giri added.
