Today's youth live in 'Download Age': Kannada writer

Mangalore, November 30: 'Kannada Chintane Saptaha' (Kannada Contemplation Week) organised by the Department of Kannada, St Aloysius College, was inaugurated by eminent writer and scholar Dr Taltaje Vasanth Kumar at the College auditorium on Friday.

 

Delivering the inaugural address, he said that Kannada ought to be used in our daily circumstances to express our thoughts and views. When we contemplate the language on daily occasions, it helps the language grow and become fulfilling. In today's situation, if we look at the linguistic-oriented map of Karnataka, ancient languages are slowly fading away, he said.

 

Addressing the students, he said that the youth today lived in the 'Download Age', where all they did was download. In such a case, when will you think freely and apply your minds? We have a controlled mind these days. Students should be allowed to think freely and form their own opinions. We see rather fewer essay-type questions in examinations, which is very adverse to the development of language. We ourselves have created a world where the present-day children are unable to comprehend words in Kannada. If there is awareness in people about Kannada language, then we can preserve its essence. We should retain the original words of the language, he said.

 

He said that having a history of over 1000 years, although Kannada has been given the status of a classical language today, it is yet to receive facilities pertaining to it.

 

Delivering the presidential remarks, vice-principal of the college Fr Francis D'Almeida said that Kannada must not be forgotten. The poetry, folklore, culture and literature of Kannada should be encouraged and kept alive. There should be respect in every student for our official language, he said.

 

Head of Kannada Department, St Aloysius College, Dr Saraswathi made the introductory remarks. Shruthi delivered a vote of thanks.

Udupi, Apr 24: While several state governments and NGOs are actively working to provide essentials to the needy amid the COVID-19 lockdown, a fisherwoman in Karnataka's Udupi has proved that even a small gesture of help for others can make a huge difference in the society.
A fisherwoman, Sharadakka, distributed rice to 140 needy families in her neighbourhood during the ongoing lockdown. The contribution was made by spending all her life savings amounting to Rs 30,000. The amount was saved by her over a period of time in an effort to build a house for herself.
On Thursday Udupi Deputy Commissioner G. Jagadeesh visited her and ensured help to build her house.
"Spending her meagre earnings, Sharadakka generously filled many empty stomachs amid the nation-wide lockdown, which is a matter of pride," said the Deputy Commissioner.

Kasaragod, Apr 6: Even as the number of positive cases of Novel Coronovirus is on increase in this district, the ten-member medical team from Thiruvananthapuram on Monday will inspect and review modalities to convert the proposed Kasaragod medical college into a COVID-19 hospital.

Given the constraints being faced by the district hospital in Kanhangad near here, the 200-beded Kasaragod medical college hospital in Ukkinada near here would be equipped to cater to the Covid-19 patients on isolation.

The ten member medical experts who reached here late on Sunday, are on a special mission to immediately equip the hospital as to convert it as a Covid-19 centre.

Kasaragod, Jul 27: Seven persons belonging to two relative-families who attended a funeral recently had been tested positive for Coronavirus on Monday.

Sources said the two families had been to Thavinjal near here for the funeral of a man who died at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital on July 19.

Later, the samples of these seven persons were sent for testing after they developed symptoms of COVID-19, the result of which came out on Monday.
