Mangalore, December 1: A group of youth from Kerala has accused a person from Deralakatte village in Mangalore taluk, of duping them of thousands of rupees in the pretext of granting them visas for abroad.
Addressing media persons at a press meet, Sudhakar N S, father of one of the victims and a resident of Kollam alleged that a person by name Mohammed Shafi Shoukath of Deralakatte promised to provide visas for employment abroad but duped his son and others by not only not providing the visas but also by not returning the money they invested in.
Shoukath asked for Rs. 1,80,000 and took away Rs.45,000 in advance. He asked for an additional Rs. 10,500, which was also given to him. A notary document was also given by him with regard to the money given and had in possession important documents such as the SSLC marks card and other documents of the clients with him. However, after some time, he started avoiding them. When asked to atleast return the money taken by him, he threatened back. Finally 27 people filed a complaint of duping against him at the Deralakatte police station, Mr. Sudhakar said.
The Deralakatte police have not taken apt action after the filing of the complaint and hence a complaint has also been made to the IGP and the Mangalore City Police Commissioner. It is suspected that Shoukath might have duped around 200 people in a similar manner, he said.
The victims who claimed that they came in contact with Shoukath through their friends, said that they only knew about the office address of Shoukath. The office is now closed, they said.
Victims including Adarsh Ravi of Ernakulam, Vinil V Kumar of Kottayam, Nishad P V of Mallapuram, and Sony Thomas of Cochin were present in the press meet.
