Wrestling competition sees participants from 25 districts

Mangalore, December 1: Dakshina Kannada District Pre University Board (DKDPUB) and Shree Gokarnanatheshwara College (SGC), Gandhinagar, jointly organised a two-day state-level wrestling competition in the city in the premises of the college, which commenced on Saturday.

Over 220 students in teams from 25 districts across the state have participated in the competition, which saw enthusiastic students literally wrestle with each other for the winning titles.

The state-level competition was inaugurated on Saturday by president of Shree Venkatesha Shivabhakthi Yoga Sangha, Gandhinagar, and member of SGC management committee B Devadas.

Deputy Speaker of State Legislative Assembly N Yogish Bhat presided over the inaugural programme.

Deputy Mayor Amithakala, secretary of Shree Venkatesha Shivabhakthi Yoga Sangha Vasanth Karandoor, managing committee member of the college Dr B G Suvarna, principal of the college Dr B Gangadhar,President of Dakshina Kannada Principals' Association Jagjeevan Das Bhandary, Deputy Director of DKDPUB K R Thimmaiah, Premanath Shetty and Sandeep S Rao were present on the occasion.

Shree Venkatesha Shivabhakthi Yoga Sangha is a charitable trust which manages the administration of Shree Gokarnanatheshwara College.

Mangaluru, Jan 22: Eminent industrialist Dr Mohammed Yusuf has been elected the chairperson of the Karnataka State Board of Auqaf. 

10 members of the Board cast their votes in the election held to the top post today at its office in the city. While Dr Yusuf, who was backed by the Congress, secured six votes, K N M Shafi Sa’adi, who was backed by the BJP, secured only 4 votes.

Addressing reporters, Dr Yusuf said that there was 1.32 lakh acres of Wakf land at the time of Independence. A large number of the properties were lost under various laws, including the Inam Land Abolition Act.

Flanked by Congress MLA Tanveer Sait and Minorities Welfare Dept secretary A B Ibrahim, Dr Yusuf vowed to strive hard to make the Board an example for the entire country. 

74-year-old Dr Yusuf had held the post more than once in the past. A veterinarian, Dr Yusuf had quit the government job and set up business in Bengaluru and Dubai decades ago and has earned considerable success.

Kasaragod, Apr 10: The death of five cats in the general hospital-turned-Covid-19 isolation centre here recently has evoked a little bit of scare among the health authorities who are eagerly awaiting the viscera test results of the dead animals.

The death of the cats has evoked anxiety in the backdrop of a tiger in a zoo in United States tested positive for Covid-19 recently.

It was recently that the hospital authorities had noticed the death of the cats, which include two male and a female adult and two kittens, were long been seen in and around the hospital compound.

Mangaluru, Apr 15: For the convenience of the public during the lockdown period, the Department of Posts has been providing essential services to the public at its various branch offices which are functioning from 1000 hrs to 1400 hrs.

Medicines and other essential items can be sent via parcel from any town to any place in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

Arrangements are also being made to extend this facility to nearby districts. In case of sending medicines and other essentials to other states from Mangaluru, the transportation has to be done via Bengaluru and can be expedited if a request for urgency is made, says a press release from the Senior Superintendent of Posts of Mangaluru Division on Wednesday.
